A classic camel coat, wear-with-everything black pants and oversized white shirts – there are some wardrobe pieces that we return to time and time again, the ones that strip it back, make it simple and ultimately form the foundations of our everyday looks. And whilst the magpies in us might get giddy at the thought of buying something more fun – sequin skirts and logo sweaters, we’re looking at you – it pays to curate and edit a line of simple, trusted pieces that are going to make your wardrobe, as a whole, work harder.

That’s where M&S comes in. The British high street store are the masters of back to basics dressing, with decades of experience crafting everything from flattering lingerie to chic workwear, off-duty denim to classics like your white tee, cashmere crew neck and more. So, in a bid to make getting dressed in the morning easier, we’ve edited out some of our best-loved classics. Scroll on for the current edit…

August is the perfect time to reset your wardrobe ahead of the new season. It’s an opportunity to avoid trend-led pieces and really hone in on your personal style and those cost-per-wear pieces that are going to offer myriad styling options for a year-round wardrobe. Pieces like Breton-inspired knits that pair perfectly with wide-leg trousers, white sneakers and a classic trench creating a look that nods the power of that undone, unfussy Parisian look. There’s a reason why the likes of Jane Birkin, Françoise Hardy and It-girl du jour, Alexa Chung, are continually referenced as some of the chicest women in the world – their go-to wardrobe heroes rarely change and still feel as modern and cool decades later.

Then there’s the classic white shirt – we love the quality and fit of M&S’s – size up for a more editorial look and tuck into high-waisted, straight-legged, vintage feel jeans. Or a well-cut blazer that will take you from work with black pants to dinner date layered over a silk cami or thrown casually over a slogan tee and joggers at the weekend.

And whilst a muted colour palette of black, white, navy, nudes and greys are the most rotated pieces in our wardrobes, colour can be capsule too. Case in point: M&S’s sunshine yellow midaxi dress – a holiday hero year on year; and the Barbie pink oversized shirt – great paired with denim, tucked into leather skirts or worn as a cover-up over a bikini.

Basics needn’t be boring. Choosing classic shapes like a palazzo pant and reworking with a geometric print, or a belted jacket reimagined in buttery white leather, will transcend seasons but also feel pulled together and on trend.
