We’ve all seen the Instagram posts and TikTok’s showcasing Kusama’s mesmerising Infinity Mirror Room exhibit at the Tate Modern. It’s a body of work that struck gold, a series that’s been photographed countless times and continues to book up weeks in advance. Not to mention her equally successful exhibit this summer that saw families from across the UK head to London to take part in the Obliteration Room, an apartment-style canvas that allowed you to become the artist and splatter the room with colourful stickers. And now, it’s been announced that Kusama will be bringing her largest collection to date to Manchester next year.
Adored worldwide for the surreal worlds she creates with her artistic eye, this new collection, titled Yayoi Kusama – You, Me and the Balloons, will celebrate three decades of the pioneering Japanese artist’s inflatable artworks.
Brought together for the first time in this major exhibition, it will journey through Kusama’s iconic psychedelic works, including her huge 10m tall creations. Opening up 29th June 2023, the exhibition will showcase works including giant dolls, tendrilled landscapes and a vast constellation of polka-dot spheres.
The exhibition will be opening up at Manchester’s new landmark cultural space, Factory International, which itself is set to open its doors in June 2023. As well as Kusama’s exhibition, the new space has announced a stellar opening line-up, including Free Your Mind, a large-scale immersive performance based on The Matrix films presented across the building’s flexible spaces.
A must-visit for any art lover or creative mind, this exhibition is a 2023 must-see and is destined to sell out. Bookings are now open and are well on their way to selling out so think fast if you’re looking to book a Manchester getaway.
You, Me and the Balloons opens 29.06.2023 – 28.08.2023
