The thrilling TV sensation that is Yellowjackets is returning for a second season. After scoring highly positive reviews critically and becoming the second most streamed show in Showtime’s history, another venture to the fictional Wiskayok High School in New Jersey was inevitable – and now we know the ball is really rolling after the network released the first trailer for the new season. It promises even more mystery and intrigue this time around- and hopefully some of our burning questions from Season 1 will finally be answered.
Here’s everything we know about Yellowjackets Season 2
The first ten episodes were released in late 2021 and introduced us to the group of teens involved in a plane crash. Centring on the members of a girls high school soccer team who survived the incident, Yellowjackets was a Lost-esque story of survival and mystery, with a fair bit of psychological horror thrown into the mix. Deep in the wilderness of Ontario, the once thriving team began to crack and splinter into savage clans, losing their innocence and exhibiting increasingly disturbing cult-like behaviour.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the first season, alongside the litany of questions that didn’t get nearly resolved by the end, was the back-and-forth narrative that saw the action shift from flashbacks of the teens to their adult counterparts 25 years later.
Season 2 is set to see much of the same cast from the first return, with Christina Ricci, Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Tawney Cypress and Sophie Nelisse all set to make a comeback.
There are also a few new faces who’ll be debuting in the Yellowjackets Series 2, including Simone Kessell (Obi-Wan Kenobi) as the adult Lottie Matthews, the mysterious mystic cult leader, and Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood as Walter, and entirely new character with no connections to the high school team or the plane crash, and seems to be there as an amateur detective looking to investigate the strange event that unfolded in the 25-year time gap. Lauren Ambrose, star of Six Feet Under, will be playing an adult Van, who was only seen as a teen in Season 1 and became devoted to Lottie.
The teaser trailer is, as you’d hope, pretty mysterious, giving away nothing but promising plenty more thrills and hopefully a fair few revelations. There are foreboding shots of the main characters, eerie narration about “it[s] happening again”, and Elijah Wood’s character giving a pretty good summary of the whole show: “Kidnapping, cults, death… your friendships are a little more complicated than most.” Yellowjackets is definitely a show that works best with knowing as little as possible going in, so make sure you catch up on Season 1, and get ready to be mystified when Season 2 launches in March.
