Nicole Kidman has had quite a year so far: from starring in TV shows like The Perfect Couple on Netflix and Expats on Amazon Prime, as well as films like A Family Affair , the actress has been onscreen plenty recently. And she’s not done yet: her newest movie, Babygirl, is set to release in the US later this year, before arriving in the UK in early 2025. She stars opposite Harris Dickinson (Triangle of Sadness) in a story about the ethics and dynamics of a relationship between a powerful CEO and a young intern. Here’s everything you need to know:

What is Babygirl about?

This isn’t the first film starring Kidman this year in which an age-gap relationship is part of the central plot: A Family Affair saw her play a widow beginning an affair with an actor played by Zac Efron. High powered and highly ambitious CEO Romy (Kidman) is in charge of a successful robotics company that aims to change the world. She has a loving family and seemingly “perfect” life- but that is upturned when a new intern arrives at her workplace. Samuel is played by Dickinson, who you’ll also know from Where The Crawdads Sing and The Iron Claw, and is a self-confident self-starter who attracts Romy’s attention.

Both take an interest in each other, and it’s not long before the two begin a love affair that seems thrilling, but could tear both of them apart. Romy has a family life at home, with her loving husband played by Antonio Banderas trying to help her raise the kids. She could easily lose it all- as well as her prestigious job and career- if her affair gets out. Samuel seemingly has less to lose, but questions about power dynamics come in to play- a CEO having an affair with an intern doesn’t seem hugely ethical, but does he have the power to ruin her life?

The erotic thriller is directed by Halina Reijn, best known for her work on Gen Z murder comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies, and will be released by A24. It’s set to also star Sophia Wilde (Talk to Me) and Gaite Jansen (Peaky Blinders), and had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival to good reviews from critics. It’s set to arrive in UK cinemas on 10th January.
