Netflix’s original movies this year keep on coming: the sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone and Jennifer Lopez’s thriller The Mother are just some of the big releases we’ve got marked down in our calendars. Another that’s on our horizon is the upcoming rom-com A Family Affair, featuring an cast led by Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron. It centres around a movie star (Efron) and his interest in the mother (Nicole Kidman) of one of his assistants, and how his love for her makes things complicated.

In a plot coincidentally not entirely unlike Netflix’s also upcoming Obsession, personal assistant Zara (Bullet Train’s Joey King) discovers that superstar Hollywood actor Chris Cole (who she used to work for) has become infatuated with his mother, and the attraction is mutual. But while Obsession is firmly a drama, A Family Affair is definitely a comedy.

Efron has proved his comedic chops with movies like Neighbours, Baywatch and The Disaster Artist, and Kidman has popped up in a few comedies herself including Paddington. Both of them starred together in 2012’s The Paperboy, coincidentally where they also played lovers.

There’s only been a quick preview clip for the film released so far as part of Netflix’s 2023 sizzle reel, at the moment that Zara discovers her mother’s new love interest and freaks out so much that she smacks straight into a door in shock- but other than that, there’s no other footage to go on, and you’ll have to wait a while for a full-length trailer. It’s described as being a rom-com that deals with themes of love and identity, and the consequences of the mismatch of Efron and Kidman’s characters.

Aside from the main trio, A Family Affair is also set to star Liza Koshy (Work It) and Kathy Bates (American Horror Story), with no other cast announced yet. It’s directed meanwhile by Richard LaGravenese, who’s written or directed films like P.S I Love You, The Fisher King and Disenchanted. Production has been in full swing since last year, and A Family Affair is set to arrive on Netflix on 17th November later this year.
