they cloned tyrone

Netflix has got a host of exciting-looking films coming out this year, like Luther: Fallen Sun, The Mother, and Pain Hustlers. One of their most intriguing-looking projects for 2023 is They Cloned Tyrone, an upcoming sci-fi comedy mystery that sees an unlikely trio fall into the world of government conspiracies. It’s set to star John Boyega, Teyonah Paris, Jamie Foxx and Kiefer Sutherland, and arrives on Netflix on 21st July.

Directed by Creed II writer Juel Taylor, They Cloned Tyrone is described as mixing 70s pulp fiction with sci-fi and is a mystery caper. The unlikely protagonists, played by Boyega, Foxx and Paris, accidentally find themselves uncovering a highly secret t government programme involving cloning. Netflix has been coy in revealing too much about the film’s exact plot details, but they have released a first-look trailer that gives us some clues as to what to expect. It starts off dramatically enough with the three protagonists in a dark elevator, but the silence is broken as Foxx’s Slick and then Paris’ Yo Yo break into song- with Boyega’s Fontaine looking bewildered. As the three exit the elevator in some kind of underground facility to search for answers, and Fontaine interrogates a lab worker, they find out somebody is conducting experiments on humans.

The film looks like it’ll fully embrace pulpy 70s aesthetics- the kind that Quentin Tarantino revitalised with films like Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. It’s clearly going to be stylised and a throwback, but Netflix also says that it’ll make some important social commentary. The government has apparently been spying on and cloning the population of a Black neighbourhood, with sinister implications. Fontaine is apparently one of the people who’s already been cloned, removing a sheet over a body in a lab and saying “I don’t know what that was, but it wasn’t me.” Fontaine, Yo Yo and Slick set out to investigate exactly what’s happening and who’s behind it, and for what purpose.

In addition to the main trio, They Cloned Tyrone is set to star 24 and Designated Survivor star Kiefer Sutherland, as well as Tyler Antonius (Black Mafia Family, J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley), Al-Teron (The Rookie) and Joshua Mikel (Ozark). The film arrives on Netflix on 21st July this year, and you can watch the trailer above.
