When we first heard Greta Gerwig was to direct a live-action movie of the iconic doll Barbie, we thought, how’s that going to work? But over the past few months, the world has been drip-fed casting announcements, trailers, clips and plenty of fashion moments that have had us chomping at the Barbie bit and itching to see it on the big screen when it launches here on July 21st.

We must thank British costume designer Jacqueline Durran for what will undeniably become some of the most iconic movie looks of all time. Durran has previously worked on Beauty & The Beast, Anna Karenina, Atonement (remember that green dress?), Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women, which won her an Oscar for best costume. So, it’s safe to say we are in for a fashion feast with the looks in Barbie.

Durran has really lent into the history of Barbie with the costumes we have seen so far. There’s plenty of vintage Chanel, pink Prada gingham and looks that range from Malibu Barbie to camping Barbie and Barbie on roller skates, naturally. The film also features hundreds of custom-made pieces referencing Barbie through the years that Robbie pulls off with pure conviction.

Robbie has also been fully embracing the look with her press tour wardrobe that has featured some of the most incredible Barbie-inspired looks, from a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture glittering gown to a pastel pink tweed two-piece. Granted, dressing head-to-toe like a Barbie does come easier when you’re one of the world’s biggest movie stars, but if you’re keen to covet the look, we’ve recreated some of our favourites from the film and Margot’s wardrobe. Say hello to your Barbie era…

Gerwig’s interpretation of the world’s most famous doll leans into Barbie’s history with lots of vintage-inspired looks like this one. Recreate Margot’s pink gingham dress with a more modern take in Self-Portrait’s midi, daisy-encrusted costume jewellery and Shrimp’s playful pearl beaded bag. Finish of with those iconic Match & Match PVC mules that look as though they’ve been designed with Barbie in mind.

Margot’s look for the LA Barbie premiere was nothing short of full-on Hollywood glamour. The gown was a custom-made shimmering Schiaparelli Haute Couture number with opera long gloves and a Lorraine Schwartz diamond choker. Dig deeper and you’ll find that the look was in fact inspired by a bonafide Barbie look from 1960 called ‘Solo In The Spotlight’ look from 1960.

‌Recreate the look in a more wearable way with this De La Vali feather-trimmed frock, jewel-encrusted pumps and the most Barbie-esque statement earrings we could find.
