The Shop Small Series: 3 Independent Jewellery Brands To Have On Your Radar
We adorn our bodies with charms and jewels because they look pretty, but also because they can tell a story. Maybe a necklace was a gift or an heirloom; either way jewellery is so much more than twinkly trinkets. For this very reason I wanted to shine a light on three woman who work tirelessly to deliver the most wonderful array of earrings, rings and pendants. From minimalist finishes to vibrant bling, these are just a few of the incredible small jewellery brands to add to your collection.
From great menswear stores to interiors boutiques, I’m always on the hunt for new or emerging independent businesses. There’s something so brilliantly ‘feel good’ about seeing people thrive. So this month, as we look to amp up our beach style, I felt it was a great time to delve into the world of jewellery and share the labels I know you’ll love too. They may not be huge global names, but they’re huge in terms of talent, skill and design. Each developed with a desire to fulfil a more creative career, the following collections exude notions of friendship and even love.
Admittedly that may sound a tad cheesy, but as we layer up those necklaces, I’ll bet at least one was a gift from a friend. Right? Jewellery holds memories and relationships, unlike most clothes. For instance, the simple yet dainty Elska infinity necklace from Lines & Current represents love, ‘you & me’, ‘sister & sister’ or something more intimate. While each gemstone from Sarah Verity’s collection carries a different deep meaning. Blue opal is all about calmness, confidence and is known to help heal, while blue quartz can light up your creative spark and ability to communicate. So whether you need your own talisman, wish to treat a loved one or simply want to complete your summer wardrobe, read on to discover jewellery brands you’ll want to support.

1. Lines & Current
Specialises in: Minimalist Pieces
Launched by creative director and designer Rebekah Johanson, this is a collection to watch if you like clean lines and simple, statement-worthy pieces. Johanson calls it “a jewellery and accessories brand for normal girls who ‘work hard to keep it simple’.” What started in a small box room in her home is now a growing business. A few years in, her husband Jon Johanson sold his property management company to help run Lines & Current and they’ve since taken on three other team members to help with customer service, fulfilment and socials.
“We just try and do what we do well,” Johanson admits. “We’re very customer-centric in our approach and want our customers to feel seen. I want it to be so much more than a transaction when they buy their L&C.” I can personally attest to this, having bought and been gifted necklaces I now treasure. One was a birthday present and not only does it hold a connection to a special friend, but it’s understated and timeless. Again, Johanson feels very impassioned about this, adding, “it’s always exciting to support a small brand, something with soul, something unique with a story to share; it feels good when wearing it or using it.” It most certainly does.
Belfast-born jewellery brand, Lines & Current may resonate with minimalist style, but it is all about soul. Designer Rebekah Johanson created a collection that’s inspirational, yet simple, down to earth, and accessible with a story to tell.
2. Sarah Verity Jewellery
Specialises in: Adjustable Rings
Sarah Verity Parham began her career as an Art Director and then Creative Director in advertising back when it was a very male-dominated business. To say it was tough is an understatement, but from it, she learned so much which she would bring to her new business. Everything from how to lead teams of people to how to create ideas that sell, all of it is invaluable. It took various attempts at launching different brands until the golden moment happened, and she found success in adjustable rings.
Following a trip to Jaipur and seeing the work of local artisans, she saw the potential for something exciting. Realising that few people know their ring size, she combined the intricate detail of unusual gemstones with adjustable bands. It was a lightbulb moment when she knew her goal: “to design rings for all people and all fingers. I wanted to be non-sizeist.” The determination, will to succeed and many trips to India kept Parham going. The resulting collections are breathtakingly beautiful and utterly unique; each gemstone tells a story and carries a special meaning so when you buy, you’ll also receive a pretty gemstone meaning card and bespoke gift box. Without doubt, these are pieces to share and hand down.
Sarah Verity Jewellery specialises in adjustable rings that fit every finger. Every single piece is designed in the U.K. and hand-crafted in Jaipur, India by talented artisans, using recycled sterling silver and recycled 18 carat gold vermeil set with trusted gemstones.
3. Atelier 18
Specialises in: Colourful, Fun Designs – Specifically Huggies
For something playful and on-trend, Atelier 18 is a must. With a background in art, Sophie Mowbray launched the company with a desire to express individuality at an affordable price. She debuted their charm collection for that very reason, where you can invest in a pair of hoops and then mix and match charms to create an individual look. As one of the first to embrace this trend, they have since been copied by many, which is a constant battle for brands breaking out.
“We are a small brand and love that!” claims Mowbray. “The high street has changed so much over the years, so I think people like to shop small to find unusual and unique pieces. Plus, we’re able to offer very good customer service and personal advice.” Something you won’t always find with mainstream labels. She is also an ardent advocate for working with skilled craftspeople. “Building relationships with artisan workers is important to me,” she shares. “So I’ve developed amazing relationships with jewellers in Jaipur and Delhi. Our best-selling alphabet pendants are made by a wonderful friend who is a master of his trade. Over the years, our working relationship has developed into a close friendship.”
Something that rings true with all these businesses is that respect is key. Allowing age-old skills to flourish means modern-day brands can develop and expand. This is the case for Atelier 18, as September sees the launch of Atelier 21 – stylish jewellery for today’s modern man. So watch this space for even more fabulousness from this colourful, growing label.
For colour-loving, statement-making maximalists, Atelier 18 is the brand for you. Created from a desire to find exciting and fun jewellery that didn’t cost a fortune, you’re invited to get creative with these bold, unique pieces. If these aren’t Insta-friendly – what is?!
