We’ve seen a wealth of trainer trends this year – from the Dua Lipa-approved ballet flat hybrid to 90s-inspired slim trainers and bold leopard print designs. For Autumn/Winter 25, however, a new trend is on the agenda: black trainers. Trust us, they add a cool-girl edge to just about every look. Scroll to shop the trend…

Remember when the white Adidas Samba reigned supreme? The shoe of the moment was everywhere, selling out and going on pre-order countless times –until Rishi Sunak wore a pair for a press call and, just like that, its reign was over. Fashion can be fickle, of course, and this moment paved the way for a rainbow of new trainer colours. Suddenly, the sleek, pared-back aesthetic was gone.

Now, fashion girls are pairing just about any trainer with everyday looks, from chunky New Balance dad trainers with a white maxi skirt to Puma’s ballet-style trainers with straight-leg jeans, or retro Nike Cortez with boxer shorts and blazers.

Just look at girl-of-the-moment Olivia Dean and how her black Adidas Superstars add a retro cool to an otherwise polished look.

It seems anything goes when it comes to this low-key footwear, meaning you can get more out of your wardrobe than ever.

The latest shoe we’ve been spotting everywhere is the black trainer, and for good reason. Undeniably cooler than its white counterpart, a black style adds a clunky, edgy look to any outfit. So, where to start? We’re seeing every major trainer trend go jet black. If you’re into a chunky, dad-style trainer, we love the New Balance 1906R’s technical design with lime green trims – very Charli XCX. Or, try Axel Arigato’s similar jet-black shape with contrasting white laces. We love them layered with the cool shoe charms the brand offers in-store for free.

If you favour a sleeker silhouette, check out Alo’s butter-soft Sunset sneaker. It’s perfect with sporty shorts and a ribbed sock while the weather is still warm. Or, for a serious investment, the Miu Miu x New Balance football boot-inspired trainers are the ultimate flex. Top tip: Axel Arigato has a similar style for a more reasonable price point, and we’re sure it won’t be long before the high street follows suit.

If there’s one trainer we’ve worn on repeat this season, it’s the Adidas SL72. We can’t wait to get our hands on the jet-black version.

This ’90s classic returns for a sleek but sporty feel.
