Having your boiler break in the middle of winter is not great – something I can attest to from recent experience. While I waited for things to be fixed, though, I took matters into my own hands and invested in a heated throw (not to be confused with the kind designed exclusively for beds). Long story short, it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made – here’s why.

Admittedly, I’ve heard friends praise the seemingly forgettable homeware addition, but I wasn’t entirely convinced it was worth forking out 30+ quid on. So here I am, falling on my sword to admit that I have seen the light. My boiler has now been fixed, but my heated blanket is still used daily. Not only is it a more economical alternative to heating your whole house, but it’s also more effective, focusing exclusively on warming you. Plus, you can customise your heating settings so that it only gets so hot and turns off after your preferred time.

Keen to see if I was the only person with strong feelings on the matter, I did a call out/cry for help to The Handbook team. The result? I’m not alone in my high esteem for the heated throw.

“Working from home in an old Victorian building in the depths of a Scottish winter… it’s chilly even with the heating whacked up. My heated throw was probably my least sexy purchase of 2024, but it is also one of my faves. 10/10 would recommend,” shares Astrid, Contributing Fashion & Lifestyle Editor.

Not to be dramatic, but my life can now be divided into two distinct stages: life before, and after I bought my heated throw.

“Not the ‘coolest’ item I own (pun intended), but this is a lifesaver in the colder months,” adds Harriet, Head of Partnerships. “The only issue you’ll have is staying awake when watching your favourite new series.”

A Silentnight teddy fleece electric blanket, considered one of the best heated throws, boasts a white, quilted texture and comes with its packaging and a white control switch for comfort control and heat settings.
“This is my first winter in my new flat, and I’ve never experienced such cold! The draft somehow manages to sneak in through every window. I picked this up during a rainy lunch break after finally reaching my limit, and it has completely changed my life. I curl up under it anytime I’m at home… but major warning: it will make you never want to leave your bed during the winter months!” – Caitlin, Senior Campaign Success Manager
