The latest home decor craze is for the candle obsessed. The simple matchbox has had a makeover and we’re here for it. From the quirky Jonathan Adler match strike to designer matchboxes, could there be a better gift for the interiors lover?
As a self-confessed candle addict, I’ve also been a matchbox collector for years. Collating cute little books of matches from cool restaurants and boutique hotels from across the globe, they’ve become a showcase of design, art and iconic branding. So it’s no surprise to me that stylish brands have cottoned on to this, developing colourful and chic matchboxes as a the perfect accessory to luxurious scented candles.
The most instantly recognisable label to have embraced this move is Archivist. What started as a stationery business, soon became known for its stunning matches. The family-run company has collaborated with Wanderlust Paper Co., and incredible artists including Ariane Butto, Charlotte Farmer and Louise Lockhart to create boxes so beautiful they are art in their own right. Another artist who turned his pen to the matchbox is John Derian. His decoupage creations provide a pop of graphic colour and a dose of whimsy, making them a must-have for any design conscious shopper.

The other big trend is obviously the Insta-friendly match strike. Again, these look like mini sculptures to complement your coffee table set-up. Jonathan Adler’s range is spectacularly fabulous, featuring everything from a mohawk to an elephant. Personally, I also adore the frill detailed ceramic match holder from Superfluities. So pretty.
