As if there wasn’t enough going on in London above street-level, when you explore deep below London’s streets and skyscrapers you’ll find a warren of secret bars buried right under our feet. It’s not just the tube down there, you know.

From hidden champagne bars to mysterious subterranean speakeasies, and the a club that was once a WC, here are 27 of our favourite underground drinking spots in London.

The Libertine

Set in the immense vaults beneath The Royal Exchange, The Libertine is the newest hidden secret bar in the heart of the city. Sitting on the same site where the very first royal alcohol licence in Britain was granted, this space is steeped in hedonism – where merchants and rogues from across the city took part in boisterous ‘tippling’.

A modern revival of those mischievous times, the brand new venue is made up of a large destination bar, lively drinking and dining corners, main restaurant and two private dining rooms with a secret whiskey vault. The menu focuses on wholesome seasonal fare served from lunch till late – think seafood dishes, dry-aged steaks and snacks for sharing. And we can’t forget about the drinks menu, created in partnership with some of the city’s best distilleries, breweries and wine merchants.

Viajante87

This new underground hideaway comes from the founders of Los Mochis, and is Notting Hill’s first zero-waste cocktail bar. With its very own dedicated mixology lab and a zero waste drinks philosophy, expect cutting-edge cocktails with experiential crafting techniques.

Located down a discreet street in Notting Hill, the subterranean enclave awaits, where you’ll find banquettes snaking around the main room and velvet stools hidden in dark, intimate corners.

The Club at Amazonico

Chances are you’ve heard of Amazonico, the Mayfair restaurant known best for their rainforest-inspired décor, vibrant atmosphere and South American cuisine. But what you probably haven’t heard of is the secret spot located underneath the restaurant.

Behind a discreet doorway (via the kitchen) you’ll have to be really lucky to get an invite to ascend the golden-clad staircase and enter the restaurant’s best kept secret. It’s invite only, with no membership and no way to request or guarantee access, making it one of London’s most exclusive spaces. Décor-wise, expect a golden octopus, a seashell bar, and sequin-covered columns.

The Living Room at Meraki

The first thought as you enter a restaurant probably isn’t to look behind the wine shelf. But disappear behind it at Meraki and you’ll find a dimly lit corridor, revealing a secret entrance to a subterranean lounge, The Living Room. Here you’ll be met with cocktails, dim lighting, plush velvet seating and of course, Meraki’s renowned Greek food.

Two of their signature ‘caves’ (private brick-lined booths) can be booked for up to 8 guests for those who want to dine in a more intimate and exclusive setting, and a late-night menu is on offer to a soundtrack of beats from resident DJs until the early hours.

Nocturne

Nocturne is housed beneath a wine and cheese shop in South Kensington, with features that are incongruous with everything a great basement bar should have; cocktail cabinets, low lighting, a centrepiece piano and drinks trolleys.

Once below ground, make sure to try the Strawberry & Ginger Negroni (gin, campari, sweet vermouth, strawberry and ginger) and the Coconut & Pineapple Boulevardier (bourbon whiskey, Italian vermouth, bitters, coconut, pineapple and jelly).

Bandra Bhai

Forget basement dive bars. At Bandra Bhai, you’ll be granted access to a retro Indian smugglers den, full of spectacular trinkets, foreign liquor, gaudy art and velvet upholstery. A ‘delightfully tacky, dimly lit, groovy basement spot’ is how they describe themselves, and a visit to this underground space will see you drinking cocktails that are heavy on the Indian flavours.

Think the Blackberry with Animal gin, Cocchi Americano, cynar, punt e mes and blackberry; or the Pineapple, with Tidel Rum, coconut, pineapple, cinnamon and citrus. There’s also a range of Indian small plates to nibble whilst you sip, including Hara Kebab with spinach, Rosevale potato and tamarind chutney; and Chilli Paneer.

The Gloria in question is a former girl about town, she partied with Hendrix, spent her life in hotels, taught Bowie how to do his make up and can make a mean whiskey sour. Gremio De Brixton

Next time you go to Brixton then forgo the market and village and instead head to St Matthew’s Church because underneath it you’ll find tapas restaurant, Gremio de Brixton. Walking down the stairs you’ll find yourself in a dimly lit, cavernous room with exposed brick arches. There are nods to Roman Catholicism and Spanish matadors throughout but it’s the tapas that we’re really there for.

Well priced and with generous portions, make sure you order the fried aubergines with honey; Serrano ham croquettes; and chicken ad chorizo saffron rice. At the weekend then dance it all off when the DJs take to the decks – if you’re not too full.
