How To Style This Season’s Hottest Hair Colour

28th March 2023 | By Tamara Corin

We told you so back in January, Never before has a hair colour been so popular or so flattering. Copper hair is transforming blondes, brunettes even redheads for a modern edgy look that has serious sex appeal and suits most skin tones. We spoke to Hershesons colourist in-the-know John Alfred, who has worked his magic on many celebrities’ and influencers’ locks.

Fancy a change for the new season? Here’s everything you need to know about switching to the trending copper hair colour…

Who does it suit?

Copper hair is for everyone. There are no rules on skin tone or hair type. Traditionally it’s been recommended to clients with fair skin and blue/green eyes as it brings out the contrast eye colour, but everyone can definitely rock copper hair. There are no restrictions whatsoever, there’s a “copper’ to suit everyone.

What to consider before trying the trend?

If you’re going for a colour that is applied to the roots, you need to think about maintenance. Roots come through and need maintenance every 4-6 weeks. Also, it’s worth thinking about making tweaks to maybe your makeup to compliment your new colour, same with your clothes. It’s not just your hair that will change, it’s your entire look.

The different tones of copper.

Copper is a broad term, it can mean anything from deep, dark auburns to light strawberry blonde. What is possible differs from person to person, depending on your natural colour, previous artificial colour, time, and budget. These factors should all discussed during your colour consultation.

How to choose the right shade?

Do your homework before going to see your colourist. Bring inspirational photos of the colour you love, and even the colour you’re not so keen on, both is really helpful to your colourist and can ensure you’re both on the same ‘colour’ page.

The celebrities to inspire your look.

Kendall Jenner famously gave it a go. SZA looked fantastic with her copper look. Emma Stone has the softer, natural looking copper hue while Ashley Benson went for a fiery copper. The list keeps on growing…

The upkeep

Depending on the colourist’s technique, root colours tend to need refreshing every 4-6 weeks. Whereas, for some clients who are naturally blonder and opt for balayage and copper toners, this will require less maintenance.

The aftercare

Shampoos that are designed for coloured hair are important to keep hair colour locked in, bright and minimise fade. There are many copper tinted conditioners on the market now which are really great to use (in moderation – ask your colourist how often for your hair) to top up the colour and don’t forget your colour corrector too.
