Winter layering

Keeping warm and looking chic needn’t be mutually exclusive. Get your winter layering right and your proportions on point, and you can ensure a pulled-together look that keeps you toasty. From slinky slip skirts paired with chunky knits to this season’s sweater scarf trend, here are six lessons in winter layering from some of Instagram’s most stylish…

Zara Martin gives a masterclass on how to do the two-jacket trend. Start with a simple white shirt – we love shopping in the menswear department for a relaxed, oversized silhouette – and add a heritage check blazer and a tougher, cooler leather trench. Yves Salomon’s merlot-hued iteration is a welcome alternative to classic black. Finish the look with some washed denim split jeans and pointed-toe boots for a polished edge.

A cocooning blanket scarf is one of the easiest ways to add an extra layer of warmth. Go tonal and match your scarf to your coat either in the exact same colourway as Alex Rivière Sieber or mix shades of the same for added texture, as seen on stylist Emma Brown.

Erna Leon of MERCER7 showcases how to do a shorter hemline in the colder months - a chunky roll-neck sweater, oversized blazer, and leather shorts layered up over polka dot tights and the chunkiest of over-the-knee boots.

Scandi style star Funda Christopherson perfectly demonstrates the sweater as a scarf trend. Choose a classic Breton stripe for a final touch of texture and print, and simply drape and twist it over your shoulders like you would a scarf. Perfect for those in-between days when you might want to add an extra layer at the last minute.

Gilets continue to have a moment and they don’t come much cosier than in fussy shearling. Layer up over your favourite chunky knit for an alternative to a big winter coat.
