Thought Provoking New Crime Drama Curfew Is One To Watch

There’s not much better TV-wise to sink into than a new crime thriller, with recent highlights including Slow Horses Series 4 and the comedic The Gentlemen on Netflix. Paramount+ has a new series coming out later this year that is sure to catch plenty of attention: Curfew, based on a book by author Jayne Cowie, is set in a world that imagines what would happen if a curfew was placed on all men during the night hours.  When a shocking crime takes place, it’s investigated by a group of women as questions are raised over who committed it. Here’s all to know:

What is Curfew about?

Curfew takes place in an alternative version of London. Due to increasing crime rates and violent incidents against women, a law is brought into place in which all men have to abide by a strict 12-hour curfew at night time, restricting their movements. They’re also tracked by an ankle tag 24 hours a day and are unable to leave their house from 7 PM to 7 AM. The idea of course is to minimise if not eliminate crime against women through the fictional Women’s Safety Act, but things will be tested by a series of events that occur sometime after it’s enacted. A woman is brutally murdered during the curfew period, and her body is left deliberately outside a women’s safety centre.

Of course, this immediately attracts attention and seemingly throws into doubt the effectiveness of the curfew laws. A seasoned officer, Pamela Green (played by Industry’s Sarah Parish), is sure that the crime could not have been committed by anyone but a male suspect and launches an investigation into unmasking who it is. While she might be convinced, others around her aren’t- the curfew and ankle tagging have been a success so far, and the idea that it could’ve been subverted is something people don’t want to think about. Pamela dismisses these doubts, believing someone broke out of curfew and found a way to commit a terrible crime, but she’ll be up against forces who want to keep things as they are and mass panic at bay. There’s also a race against time element to the plot, as the murderer could strike again, throwing the situation into further doubt.

What else do we know, and who else stars?

The thought-provoking mystery thriller also stars Doctor Who star Mandip Gill, Lucy Benjamin (Detectorists), Larry Lamb (Gavin & Stacey), Alexandra Burke (Pretty Red Dress) and Anita Dobson (Inside No. 9). It’s set to arrive on Paramount+ on 10th October.
