Prequels are the theme of the season, with Game of Thrones getting another prequel series in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and now Dexter. It’s been a long time coming, but at last we’ve got our first proper look at the prequel series to the hugely popular vigilante crime drama.

Dexter: The Original Sin is set to arrive from Paramount+ on our screens soon, with a new actor (Patrick Gibson) attached to play the titular character in the early days of his career. It’s the first return to the Dexter series since New Blood premiered in 2020- so here’s everything you need to know about the show.

What is Dexter: The Original Sin about?

Dexter originally began all the way back in 2006, chronicling the life of vigilante serial killer Dexter Morgan, portrayed since then by Michael C. Scott in his most iconic role. It wrapped up after eight seasons and then later returned with the sequel series The New Blood four years ago, and since then there’s been something of a hiatus for what comes next. Dexter: The Original Sin is the answer, a prequel that’s been long in the making and will flesh out further one of modern TV’s most iconic characters.

Before we first encountered him and his killing ways in the original show’s debut episode, Dexter had been dealing out his unique brand of justice for some 15 years. The new series will delve into this earlier period, telling the antihero’s origin story and how he became the man we saw in the original series. Patrick Gibson, star of the OA and Shadow and Bone, takes on the role of the younger Dexter, with the show chronologically set in Miami in 1991.

At this point in time, he’s still a student, but the urge to kill is something he finds too hard to handle. Opposite Gibson is Christian Slater (The Spiderwick Chronicles) as Harry Morgan, Dexter’s father, who will give him advice on how to use his murderous feelings against those outside the law, rather than innocent lives. All the while, Dexter is beginning a career working as a forensics expert for the police, setting up his future double life.

Who else stars, and what else do we know?

The rest of the cast for the new show meanwhile includes Patrick Dempsey (Ferrari), who plays Aaron Spencer, James Martinez (House of Cards), who plays Angel Batista, Alex Shimizu (The Outcasts) as Vince Masuka and Christiana Milian (Resort to Love) as Maria LaGuetra. Plus, there’ll be a special guest star appearance from Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar, playing Dexter’s boss Tanya Martin. Dexter devotees will be treated to 10 episodes of the prequel series this season, and it’s set to debut on Paramount+ in the near future.
