Dope Thief Is The New Crime Series To Watch

With the likes of Severance, Prime Target and Your Friends and Neighbours, Apple TV+ has been making some of the most exciting TV shows so far this year. They’re not slowing down either, with new crime drama series Dope Thief coming to the platform in March- and it definitely looks like one for the watchlist.

With Atlanta and Bullet Train star Brian Tyree Henry in the main role, it follows two friends who mistakenly cross paths with a drug gang, and are suddenly in a dangerous world in which there may be no escape.

What is Dope Thief about?

Based on the book of the same name by Dennis Tafoya, Dope Thief is set in Philadelphia, and centres around two close friends, Ray and Manny, both described as “delinquents” who routinely get into trouble. Ray is played by Tyree Henry, while Manny is played by Wagner Moura, best known for playing Pablo Escobar in Narcos (another drug-themed crime drama). While looking to make some quick cash, the two come up with a scheme to rob an unknown house in the countryside. They pose as DEA agents to gain entry to the building and flee with whatever valuables they find, but their apparently foolproof plan seriously backfires.

It turns out that the house is owned by a powerful drug gang, the leader of which isn’t best pleased that someone has just stumbled across and robbed it. Ray and Manny also discover that the drug syndicate runs the largest narcotics corridor on America’s east coast, and now what started as a petty crime move has escalated into a huge crime conspiracy. With their lives at stake and a drug empire in pursuit of them, Ray and Manny will have to work out how exactly they can beat the odds and make it out alive. While we don’t know how closely the series will follow the original novel, the book also sees Ray become conflicted with his life of crime, and realises he wants a way out – but the drug lord after him and Manny have other ideas. It’s set to be a thrilling ride.

Who else stars, and is there a release date?

Also starring in Dope Thief is Marin Ireland (Feud: Capote Vs The Swans), alongside Kate Mulgew (Orange Is The New Black), Amir Arison (The Blacklist) and Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning). The eight-part series will premiere on Apple TV+ on 14th March.
