Created by Scott Z. Burns, who produced the Oscar-winning climate change documentary An Inconvenient Truth, as well as writing the screenplay for Contagion, Extrapolations is set in the near future, where climate change has taken enough of a hold to have chaotic effects embedded into everyday lives across the globe. Eight different stories are told across eight episodes, and while they all vary in location and characters, the theme of climate change and fighting for the future of the planet is universal.
Extrapolations feature a cast that would be hard to put together even in a Hollywood blockbuster, featuring not only Streep and Miller, but also Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, David Schwimmer, Tobey Maguire, Forest Whitaker, Marion Cotillard, Edward Norton, Eliza González, Keri Rusell, Diane Lane, Heather Graham. Other notable names include Murray Bartlett, Daveed Diggs, Tahar Rahim, Cherry Jones, Hari Nef, Judd Hirsch, Yara Shahidi and Michael Gandolfini. Not much is known about the individual characters that some of the stars are playing, but the first look photos might clue us in: Sienna Miller’s character seems to be heavily pregnant and navigating a sickly orange forest, Kit Harington’s is apparently planting something, and Meryl Streep looks concerned and weary.
Some of the other talent attached to the series is Ellen Kuras, who worked as a cinematographer on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and is directing a number of episodes, and writer Dave Eggers, known for his book A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. Apple’s official synopsis reads: Eight interwoven stories about love, work, faith and family from across the globe will explore the intimate, life-altering choices that must be made when the planet is changing faster than the population. Every story is different, but the fight for our future is universal. There’s no trailer yet, but you can expect one any moment now, as the show is set to release on 17th March.

Apple TV+ has built a name for itself over the last few months, attracting big names for its shows, from Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes in The Essex Serpent to Jason Segal and Harrison Ford in Shrinking. This March sees the service taking it up a notch with the arrival of Extrapolations, an anthology series depicting how climate change affects our planet and features a seriously impressive cast, with Sienna Miller and Meryl Streep leading the pack.
