Three young women walk together indoors. One wears a black corset and jewellery, another sports a green floral outfit with red hair, and the third sips from a large pink cup—this vibrant trio channels Forbidden Fruits style with confidence.

It’s not often that you get a horror film that looks like it could fit naturally on an Instagram reel, but Forbidden Fruits definitely gives that vibe. Arriving in cinemas next month, it stars Lili Reinhart (Riverdale), Victoria Pedretti (You), Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty) and Alexandra Shipp (Anyone But You), who are all part of a witch cult at a shopping mall in secret. But things get messy when the group’s new hire starts to challenge the rest- here’s everything you need to know.

What’s the plot of Forbidden Fruits?

Forbidden Fruits is based on the play Of the Women Came the Beginning of Sin, and Through Her We All Die by Lily Houghton, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside director Meredith Alloway. The comedy-horror follows a secret group that operates from the basement of a Free Eden store in a shopping mall and styles itself as a witchy femme cult. Chief among them is their leader, Apple, played by Lili Reinhart, who’s best known for her role as Betty in Riverdale. You star and scream queen Victoria Pedretti plays Cherry, another key member of the witch cult, and Barbie’s Alexandra Shipp plays Fig.

Four women stand in a colourful, dimly lit room. Two face each other in the foreground, one holding a large glass vase filled with forbidden fruit. In the eclectic, festive space, two others stand close together in the background, looking concerned.

Everything is running well for them in the mall, and when they encounter Pumpkin (Lola Tung), who’s an employee at the nearby pretzel shop Sister Salt, they immediately decide to approach her to get her to join up too. Intrigued by the idea, Pumpkin accepts and is inducted (in full witchy fashion, judging by the trailer) and becomes part of the sisterhood. The members are known as “Fruits”, as you’ve probably picked up from the character names, and each wears matching bracelets.

However, the group’s harmony begins to be tested as Pumpkin spends more time with them, and begins to learn from both Cherry and Fig, secretive info that they don’t want Apple to know about. The feeling of tension increases when the other two insinuate that Pumpkin is a bit too close to Apple and spends too much time trying to be like her. You’ll have to watch for yourself to find out exactly how far things go for the Fruits, though the film’s synopsis does hint that Pumpkin “challenges their performative sisterhood, the women are forced to face their own poisons or succumb to a bloody fate.”

Who else stars

Forbidden Fruits stars some other high-profile names in the form of influencer and model Emma Chamberlain (YOLO), and actress Gabrielle Union (Truth Be Told).
