I Know What You Did Last Summer helped to launch the careers of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Freddie Prinze Jr when it released back in 1997- and now, 28 years later, Hewitt and Prinze Jr are returning for a new sequel.

Also a follow up to the franchise’s second instalment I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, the sequel-reboot follows a similar premise to the original: a group of friends accidentally kill a pedestrian in their car, and despite managing to cover up their involvement, are stalked by someone claiming to have knowledge of what happened. Here’s all we know:

What is I Know What You Did Last Summer about?

In the past few years, there’s been a resurgence of the slasher genre, with films like Pearl and Maxxxine, and “legacy sequels” like Scream and Halloween that bring back original cast members alongside new faces. I Know What You Did Last Summer is following that trend by introducing us to a younger crop of actors once again trying to escape a terrifying murderer who starts stalking them. The newcomers include Madelyn Cline (Glass Onion), Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta) and Sarah Pidgeon (Tiny Beautiful Things), who play five friends involved in a fateful accident.

One night while driving, they accidentally hit and kill a pedestrian, and in their panic, decide to cover up their involvement. One year later, however, the group realises that someone out there knows exactly what they did, and is stalking all five of them. They realise that their situation parallels an identical incident decades before, which resulted in an infamous massacre in the city of Southport- the events depicted in the original film. The friends decide to contact the only two survivors of the 1997 killings: Julie James (Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr) for help. But when events turn deadly, as another stalker with a hook for a hand goes on a rampage, they realise they may be doomed to repeat the past.

What else do we know, and when does the film release?

Sarah Michelle Gellar has already confirmed she won’t be involved in the sequel, owing to the fate of her character in the original, but Hewitt and Prinze Jr have both said their roles will be substantial. In the director’s chair for this film is Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, best known for directing the dark comedy Do Revenge. I Know What You Did Last Summer arrives in cinemas on 18th July.
