The Handbook’s fashion team rounds up the best linen shirts for men to make late-summer styling easy breezy. From classic white to playful embroidered styles, scroll to shop our edit that everyone can wear… not just the boys.

‌Few items feel as effortless as a summer linen shirt. Along with an impeccably tailored blazer and a great pair of jeans, they are one of the pillars of a capsule wardrobe, especially for the warmer months.

Whether layered over an Italian-style suit for a wedding or paired with swim shorts on the beach, they offer that sweet spot that sits between casual and pulled together. But where to start? Just about every menswear brand has its own iteration, so we’ve edited them down to make shopping easy.

On the high street you can’t go wrong with a bit of M&S. They have dozens of styles and colourways to choose from, but this season we especially love their Cuban style with short sleeves and a wider neck – great paired with a ‘50s style chino trouser, vest and chain for a slightly edgier look.

‌If you’re keen to invest, it’s worth checking out brands such as Oliver Spencer and Sunspel, whose quality and fit is second to none. As well as Moss Bros and Sirplus who, this season, have nailed it with a sugary pastel colour palette. Sirplus’ limoncello-hued shirt will work hard on holiday but also look great under an inky blue suit for something smarter.

This season also sees a slew of embroidered and printed options. Abercrombie’s Camp Shirt is subtly decorated with embroidered botanicals in an understated colourway, but if you’re after something a little more statement, Tombolo’s Cabana shirt with merlot detailing and grape embroidery takes the linen shirt from humble to hero piece in an instant.

LOOK 1: THE RELAXED LINEN SHIRT

The beauty of a linen shirt is its relaxed feel, so really lean into that and pair it with loose fit trousers – also in linen – flip flops and a classic pair of Ray-Bans. A kind of grown-up gap year vibe, if you will.

LOOK 2: THE TAILORED LINEN SHIRT

The perfect holiday look for dining at dusk or post-dinner walks on the beach, pair a classic long-sleeved linen shirt with white chinos and suede loafers.

Finally, our latest discovery doing linen shirts with a difference is sustainable Indian brand Harago. Using traditional craftsmanship like block printing, tie-dying and ikat, they take cool on-trend silhouettes and give them something really special making them feel like one-of-a kind, almost vintage pieces.

‌We love this black and white design juxtaposed with clashing striped swim shorts. For something slightly more fashion forward, layer over a black ribbed vest and fine gold chain.

BEST OF THE REST
