5 of the Best Places To Go In Greenwich

30th September 2015 | By Kate Hicks

Nothing beats the exciting buzz of London town, but sometimes we just want to escape from it all and go somewhere ‘leafy’ with a slightly slower pace don’t we? The good news is we don’t have to hurtle past miles of lonely sheep in fields to find it. Situated East and South from the centre of London, Greenwich is within easy reach. And with picturesque streets, historical landmarks and impressive greenery, it allows you to feel adequately cut off without turning you into a country bumpkin just yet. We’ve narrowed down the top 5 things we love to do there…

The Gipsy Moth pub

Historic pub with great views of the Thames

Situated on the dry dock next to the impressive Cutty Shark, this is one of Greenwich’s oldest and most popular pubs. Built in 1875 this Grade I listed building is comfy and cosy with huge ornate mirrors and a nautical theme. As the summer draws to a close, all we really want to do on a chilly autumnal Sunday is eat a big fat roast and get all warm and fuzzy on red wine don’t we?

The Brasserie

A great museum pit-stop

Nestled inside the National Maritime Museum, The Brasserie is a great option regardless of whether or not you’re visiting the museum. Combining contemporary British cooking with the tradition and heritage of the site The Brasserie offers stunning views across Greenwich Park – you’ll probably need a walk there after all the eating.

Greenwich Park

Big and green

What isn’t there to do or see here? Like Regents Park and Hyde Park this is one of the ‘Royal Parks’ and is the most historical of them all. If you want to do some cultural stuff the park has four sites; National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, the Queen’s House and Cutty Sark where you can learn more about the sea, ships and time, to narrow it down for you. Or if you’re just looking to relax you can simply ride a bike round this vast place trying to spot deer, while taking in the breath taking views of London.

Planet Pancake

Delicious bite sized pancakes with any topping you want.

How many pancakes can you manage on Shrove Tuesday? Be honest. If it’s a lot then you might want to triple your order here. Good things come in small packages so they say and these bite-sized pancakes, made with rice flour, are seriously good and cute. Whatever your mood, sweet or savoury you can choose whatever you fancy on top. Our favourite has to be the strawberries and white Belgium chocolate mmmmmm.

Royal Observatory Greenwich

Educational and great fun

Sometimes you don’t want to spend lots of money, but you don’t want to stay in for another day of Netflix box sets. When that day comes we say go to the Royal Observatory – there’s free access to the Astronomy Centre, so you’re being frugal and educational – Ross from Friends would be so proud.
