love and death

One of last year’s most underrated TV shows was FX’s Candy which starred Jessica Biel as an American woman accused of murdering her lover’s wife. The show, and particularly Biel’s lead performance, received critical acclaim- but FX wasn’t the only TV network developing a series about Candy Montgomery. HBO also had their own miniseries, Love & Death, in the works, and they’ve now finally revealed its first trailer. Starring Elizabeth Olsen as Candy, it’ll tell the same story in a different way, with HBO’s signature style.

As with many of HBO’s shows like House of the Dragon, Big Little Lies and the recent The Whitehouse Plumbers,  Love & Death is based on a book, Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs by John Bloom and Jim Atkinson. Candy Montgomery was an apparently normal housewife living in Wylie, Texas, and married to Pat Montgomery. She regularly attended church and became close friends with Betty Gore, a middle school teacher. Candy however ended up having an affair with Gore’s husband Allan, which he decided to end after a year. Betty later confronted Candy on the suspicions she’d developed, and was then later found dead with 41 blows from a wood axe.

Compared to Candy, Love & Death seems to focus more on the relationship between Candy and Allan, rather than her and Betty. Allan in this series is played by Breaking Bad and The Power of the Dog star Jesse Plemons, with Betty being portrayed by Lily Rabe, best known for her recurring roles in American Horror Story. The show’s trailer gives plenty of screen time to both Olsen and Plemons, with Candy clearly growing increasingly paranoid about Betty, and shown in several shots covered in blood, apparently processing what she’s done.

Other cast members are Patrick Fugit (Babylon, Outcast) as Pat Montgomery, Keir Gilchrist (Atypical) as Ron Adams, Elizabeth Marvel (Fargo) as Jackie Ponder and Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad, Jessica Jones) as Sherry Cleckler. Love & Death is being written by David E. Kelly, who wrote Big Little Lies, Anatomy of a Scandal and The Lincoln Lawyer and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, who worked on Homeland and Mad Men. Nicole Kidman is also an executive producer. The show arrives on HBO on 27th April, with the first three episodes releasing simultaneously- the UK however will get the series in the autumn on ITVX.
