We might be in the last weeks of summer and coming back from holidays, but don’t let that get you down: there’s plenty of great television on streaming this month to keep things fun. Returning favourites like Slow Horses and The Gentlemen will take up plenty of your social media feeds, but there’s also intriguing new shows like Netflix’s Danish series The Perfect Lie. Here is everything worth binging this month.

Slow Horses

It might be a common complaint that TV shows take too long between seasons these days- but one that definitely doesn’t have that issue is Slow Horses. Its sixth season is set to air this month, taking us back to the world of MI5 and Slough House. Gary Oldman is back in slobbish form as Jackson Lamb, as he leads the team through another testing series of events. As glimpsed in the official trailer, agents keep ending up dead, and Lamb is trying to find out who’s killing them off. Castwise, House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke, who appeared in the show’s first season, seems to be back, as is Jack Lowden, who’s been the subject of a flurry of rumours that he’ll be the next Bond.

The Gentlemen Season 2

Guy Ritchie’s crime series The Gentlemen returns after a highly successful first outing, with both Theo James and Kaya Scodelario reprising their roles. Eddie (James) is moving up in the criminal underworld, and expanding his own empire- despite the fact he’s still working under Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone). It seems like a clash between the two is on the horizon, with Susie (Scodelario) a key influence on where Eddie will end up. A few new cast members include Hugh Bonneville, Chris Eubank Jr and Maya Jama, but we’ll have to wait until Season 3 to see if reports that Meghan will be joining in the future.

MobLand Season 2

Want more gangster centric entertainment? You’re in luck for September, as MobLand, which also had a successful first season, is back for season 2. The London-set crime drama will once again feature the rival crime family the Harrigans and the Stevensons, and if you enjoyed Season 1, you’ll be pleased to know this second season will be ramping this up even more in terms of violence, betrayal and power struggles. Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren both return, as will Tom Hardy, despite his future in the show being reportedly thrown into doubt earlier this year. Newcomers include Harris Dickinson and Ophelia Lovibond

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story

Netflix’s latest instalment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s often controversial Monster anthology turns its attention to one of America’s most infamous unsolved murder cases. Unlike previous seasons, which were set in the 20th century, this one focuses on Lizzie Borden (played by Ella Beatey), the Massachusetts woman accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe in 1892, although she was ultimately acquitted. The series explores the circumstances surrounding the killings, Lizzie’s trial and the enduring mystery over the definitive culprit. Intriguingly, the show will feature two murder cases, with Sarah Paulson appearing as convicted serial killer Aileen Wuornos a century later… Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam and Rebecca Hall also star.

The Perfect Lie

Netflix’s Danish-language series The Perfect Lie falls into that ever-enticing genre of people with perfect lives falling apart. Based on Saskia Noort’s bestselling novel The Dinner Club, the thriller follows Karen (Loes Haverkorr) after she and her family move to Bergen and are welcomed into an exclusive group of wealthy friends. But when one of the group is killed in a house fire, Karen discovers that the glamorous dinner club is held together by secrets, lies and betrayal. As she searches for answers, she soon realises that everyone has something to hide.

Brothers

It’s well known that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are both friends and a good pairing onscreen- compounded by the enduring popularity of True Detective Season 1. So it was not surprising that it was announced that the pair would be co-starring again, in Apple TV’s new series Brothers. It’ll follow them as fictionalised versions of themselves, who, like in real life, are friends but are put to the test when they’re forced to live together on McConaughey’s ranch in Texas. While they get used to the new living arrangement, they discover a hint that they may actually be brothers. Such a meta premise could be tricky to pull off- but might it be comedically smart like The Studio?
