We at The Handbook love a good psychological thriller – and one led by Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway is definitely one we’re going to be seated for. Hathaway recently starred in thriller film Eileen, while Chastain appeared in The Good Nurse, now the two actresses are teaming up for Mother’s Instinct, which centers on the collapse of friendship between two close friends and 1960s housewives after a tragedy impacts their lives.

It’s set to arrive in UK cinemas later this month, so if you’ve already seen Dune Part 2  and are looking for something else to dig into, then read on:

What is Mother’s Instinct about?

The new film, directed by Benoît Delhomme, is a remake of a French language film released back in 2018, as well as a 2012 novel by Barbara Abel. Our two main characters are Alice (Chastain) and Céline (Hathaway), two housewives living in something of a perfect suburban town with apparently enviable lives. Their husbands are both highly successful, they bond over parenting kids who are both the same age and chat and gossip about everything from their deepest secrets to the most mundane details of their lives. This bond and sisterly sense of looking out for each other however suddenly comes to a crashing halt after a tragedy affects one of their children, changing their lives forever.

What else do we know?

As both come to terms with what happened, Alice and Céline’s once rock-solid friendship starts to fall apart, and they become consumed with suspicion and guilt, and a mutual paranoia grows between them. It may well be impossible for things to recover, and the twisting thriller has been described by early reviews as being in the vein of the suspense films of Already Hitchcock. The film’s trailer begins just as you’d expect it to, with Alice and Celine’s perfect lives and friendship on full display: “I’m a terrible mother” says a doubtful Alice, before Céline rebuffs her: “you’re a wonderful mother, and a wonderful friend.” But things go wrong fast when Max, Céline’s son, falls in a terrible accident, and in her grief, she begins to turn away from Alice, who is unsure of her fault in Max’s death.

Who else stars, and when is it released?

Meanwhile, Mother’s Instinct is also set to star Josh Charles (The Power) and Anders Danielsen Lie (The Worst Person in the World), and hits cinemas on 27th March. You can watch the trailer below.
