Netflix only recently released the transatlantic-themed romcom Too Much, but they’re already returning to the theme with their new film My Oxford Year. Starring Sofia Carson (The Life List), it follows an American student who jets off to the UK to study at Oxford University and meets and falls for a British guy during her studies. Also starring Corey Mylchreest (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story), the romcom is coming to Netflix on 1st August. Here’s all you need to know:

What Is My Oxford Year About?

For whatever reason, the already well-worn idea of an American woman falling for a British man is back in style- or at least Netflix seems to think so with My Oxford Year just after releasing Too Much. Even One Day, a romantic drama set at Edinburgh University but featuring two British leads, found huge success in the US (and beyond). So what sets My Oxford Year apart? The film is based on the novel of the same name by American author Julia Whelan, and it’s directed by British writer-director Iain Morris, best known for co-creating The Inbetweeners. Sofia Carson plays Anna De La Vega, a young American who has had a childhood dream to head to Britain and study at Oxford. (If that sounds familiar, it’s exactly the same premise as the 2022 Amazon Prime film Surprised by Oxford that stars Rose Reid and Ruairi O’Connor).

While she’s initially keen to explore the town and focus on her studies, she quickly meets and falls for a local, Jamie (Mylchreest). They begin to form a blossoming romance, as Anna explores her interest in literature and poetry during her time at the uni. But will their love run entirely smoothly? Perhaps not, with Netflix’s synopsis for the show hinting at some potential tear-jerker moments, and director Ian Morris saying he wants the audience to feel “all the emotions associated with the wonderful, noisy, chaotic, unexpected, funny, heartbreaking experience that is falling in love.”

My Oxford Year has always generated some buzz on social media, not least for its British-American romance concept, and it looks like it could be one of Netflix’s breakout hits of the year. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast includes Dougray Scott (Crime), Catherine McCormack (Slow Horses), Harry Trevaldwyn (Call My Agent) and Poppy Gilbert (Chloe). If you can’t wait to get immersed in all things romance and Oxford (again), the film drops on Netflix on 1st August.
