Cosy Up With Netflix’s New Romcom Drama The Life List

Netflix has made plenty of romcom dramas in the past few years, not least the much-loved series Nobody Wants This, which launched to acclaim last year. While there’ll be a bit of a wait until that show returns (later in 2025), in the meantime, you can give the streamer’s latest comedy-drama The Life List a whirl: starring Sofia Carson (Carry-On), it follows a young woman who tries to complete a “life list”.
Also starring Kyle Allen (The Inbetween), Sebastian de Souza (The Great) and Connie Britton (The White Lotus), it’s just released on streaming- here’s all you need to know before you watch.
What is The Life List about?
Alex Rose (Carson) finds herself suddenly at a crossroads in life: her mother, Elizabeth (Britton), has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and with things being difficult, seems to have given up on her dreams in life. Elizabeth becomes determined that her daughter retains her zest for life and self-confidence after she’s gone, and so sets a challenge that Alex will only discover upon her death. When the day comes, Alex finds in her will that she won’t be able to access her inheritance until she checks off each item of a list she wrote when she was a teenager. She’s surprised but sets out to fulfil her mother’s wish, with only until the new year to do so.

This task takes Alex on a journey, at times hitting the standard ‘bucket list’ stuff to push herself out of her comfort zone: getting a tattoo, teaching students in a seminar, performing at an open mic. But she will also venture into her past and family life, including finding her estranged biological father who she had never met. Of course, this being a romantic dramedy, there are a couple of love interests she meets along the way, like co-worker Garrett (Souza), but also even potentially her family lawyer Brad (Allen), who she can’t help but feel a connection to. But while she might have her mother’s wish to live up to, Alex still needs to get out of the mental hole that she was in in the first place- especially since she isn’t sure if she will ever truly fall in love.
What else do we know?
The Life List is adapted from Lori Nelson Spielman’s bestselling novel of the same name and directed by Bridget Jones filmmaker Adam Brooks. You can stream it right now on Netflix.
