Leonardo DiCaprio (Killers of the Flower Moon) is back this year with his newest cinematic outing, teaming with acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) for the dark comedy One Battle After Another. The Oscar winner stars as a grizzled former revolutionary, who, along with several of his former comrades, embarks on a journey to try and save the daughter of one of their own. Also starring Teyana Taylor (Coming 2 America), it’s set to release in September: here’s all you need to know.

What is One Battle After Another about?

One Battle After Another is Anderson’s first film since 2019’s 70s throwback Licorice Pizza, and given his track record of hugely critically successful movies is likely to be a contender for awards seasons next year. Unlike much of the director’s past work, it’s set in present, following a group of ex-revolutionaries somewhere in California. It’s also loosely based on the novel Vineyard by Thomas Pynchon, though much has yet to be revealed about the plot. DiCaprio plays one of these former revolutionaries the film centres around, Bob Fergurson, and while we don’t know a huge amount about his character, he certainly gives off “dishevelled hippie vibes,” dressed in a beanie and sunglasses. He falls back with his band of former activists when an “old enemy” resurfaces after 16 years.

This reappearance of a villainous figure from their past coincides with the group discovering that one of their own’s daughter is in peril, setting them on a mission to protect her. Given this is dark comedy, however, it seems clear that their rescue mission won’t go as smoothly as they’d hope. The official trailer also doesn’t give too much away about what more we can expect: Leo’s Bob Fergurson character talks cryptically on the phone with an unseen figure, interspersed with plenty of gunfire and shots of a desert.

Who else stars, and what else do we know?

There’s a sizeable cast joining DiCaprio in this one, including Teyana Taylor  as gun-toting revolutionary Profidia. Other big stars include both Sean Penn and musician Alana Haim, who both starred in Licorice Pizza, as well as Benicio del Toro, who’s also set to appear in Wes Anderson‘s film The Phoenician Scheme. The rest of the cast includes Regina Hall (Support the Girls), Chase Infiniti (Presumed Innocent) and Wood Harris (The Wire). One Battle After Another will also be released in IMAX cinemas, arriving on UK screens on 26th September. You can check out DiCaprio in action in the official trailer below.
