Presumed Innocent, Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Is Out Now

Apple TV+ has gotten a reputation for getting big stars for their TV series- whether Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan in WWII epic Masters of the Air, or Kristen Wiig and Laura Dern in high society comedy Palm Royale, there’s been a lot of Hollywood royalty crossing to the small screen.
Their new series, Presumed Innocent, has nabbed one of the celebs who’s evaded that trend: Jake Gyllenhaal. The Nightcrawler star hasn’t appeared in a major TV drama for over 30 years, but will be making his way to screens to lead the eight-part miniseries, and we’re certainly excited. Here’s what to know:
What is Presumed Innocent about?
Presumed Innocent is based on the novel of the same name by Scott Turow from 1987, and was previously adapted into a Harrison Ford thriller in the 90s. This new TV version sees Gyllenhaal play the chief deputy prosecutor, Rusty Sabich, working in Chicago who takes up a new case involving the violent murder of a woman, Carol Polhemus (Renate Reinsve). It’s already a grim and difficult case, not for the faint-hearted, but becomes increasingly chaotic when Rusty himself becomes implicated in the events leading to the murder. The deceased was one of Rusty’s co-workers, and it was revealed that the two had been having a secretive affair.

What else do we know, and who else stars?
Of course, Rusty is keen to prove he had nothing to do with murdering his co-worker, but it won’t be easy to explain his innocence- if you loved the Oscar-winning Anatomy of a Fall, Presumed Innocent should offer the same twisting thrills. The series comes from David E. Kelly (writer for Big Little Lies and The Lincoln Lawyer) and producer J.J Abrams (Lost, Star Wars), so there are high expectations for a really good story. Meanwhile, the cast is set to also include Ruth Negga (Preacher), Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit), Elizabeth Marvel (Homeland), Peter Sarsgaard (The Lost Daughter), O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Lily Rabe (American Horror Story).
When does Presumed Innocent release?
The series is out now and available to watch on Apple TV.
