Chris Frichot and Saba Tsegaye are well aware how big the London restaurant scene is, and how tough it can be, which is why they’ve called their restaurant, Minnow – because they’re going to ‘be a small, but fiercely independent fish in a big pond’.
Opening this Wednesday on Clapham Common, the neighbourhood restaurant will be serving up modern European dishes, plenty of cocktails and brunch at the weekend. Heading up the kitchen will be Jake Boyce (former Head Chef of Jason Atherton’s Social Wine and Tapas) he’ll be giving a nod to the flavours of the Indian Ocean where Chris’ family hail from. Dishes include squid with lemongrass, lime and ginger; baby octopus with curry leaf paste and charred green mango; whole roast poussin from Minnow’s Robata grill and caramelised watermelon with a blood orange and Campari sorbet. Breakfast will be all about the likes of chilli cornbread with fried egg, avocado, yoghurt and lime, plenty of locally roasted coffee, fresh juices and breakfast cocktails. Local beer will be on tap and the succinct wine list will be served in ‘pay as you drink’ bottles.
Indoor trees and greenery will give the restaurant a bright, fresh feel, that said when it’s sunny you can actually sit outside, as behind a door is a quiet walled garden, or you can pull up a chair at one of the tables on the pavement. An open kitchen sits downstairs, which has a more intimate feel, there’s also a vaulted booth, illuminated by a stained- glass light box, which sits inside a repurposed wine cellar.
And their good deed for Clapham? An honesty box stocked with juices as a pick me up for passers -by. We like them already.
