There’s something unapologetically glorious about a pie. Its simplicity is the very height of British cuisine. No messing about, just chuck some bits into some pastry and hey presto. Pie. As far as I’m concerned, the national anthem should be changed to just a TikTok of Tom Kerridge scoffing a meat and potato pie.

The annual Pie Week celebrations take place this week, if only we could go into central London we could no doubt enjoy all the Pie Week lights strewn along Oxford Street. The queen’s annual Pie Week address has apparently been filmed (spoiler: Andrew ate them all), and the nation will, in time honoured fashion, count down to the beginning of Pie Week, when Boris Johnson and Sir Kier Starmer will jointly gobble down a pie filled with 10 and 20 blackbirds directly outside Downing Street and in front of the world’s media.

The only question is, have you finished your Pie Week shopping? Here are some pies you can still order and enjoy at home…

Quality Chop House

A staple at The Quality Chop House, the pies are noteworthy all year round (as, for that matter, are the sausage rolls), and of course they’re geared up for Pie Week with deliveries on hand of their steak, ale and Stilton pie and their chicken and leak pie.

Or keep things trad and make the most of a pork pie, made from rare breed pork and perfect for any upcoming post-lockdown picnicking.

St John

The masters of meat, St John, have a weekly pie on offer and have done throughout lockdown. So who better to turn to for pie week?

Launching mid pie week, this week’s chicken, leek and mushroom number includes free range chickens, gently poached until the meat comes away from the bone, along with blanched leeks, and wild mushrooms.

The pie is topped off with puff pastry and all you have to do is whisk an egg and brush it on top before heating.

Parlour

Parlour, one of London’s many shopstraunts (restaurants transmogrified into shops) is the place to come during lockdown for all your needs.

And, of course, those extend to pie week pastry fixes. How about a Desperate Dan Cow Pie? The steak, ale and mushroom pie with a suet pastry is ideal served with mash potato.

Gaucho

While we can’t meet at Gaucho any more, we can still meat… (they can have that tagline for free). The Argentinian steak specialists have launched a box perfect for making home pie making.

Stick either a beef and Malbec, a chicken, chorizo, tomato and white bean or a burrata, spinach and onion pie in the oven and enjoy a glass of Vina Patricia wine while you look forward to this three course feast!

Claridge’s

Missing the finer things in life? But also craving pies? Would you believe that the two aren’t mutually exclusive?

Claridge’s Dine at Home range include three pies, which maybe just means you need to try the full trio.

The fish pie, chicken pie and steak and mushroom pie all look delicious, that is as long as you’re not tempted to diverge from the planned Pie Week theme with a Beef Wellington…

Coq d’Argent

“When does a tart become a pie?” I hear you ask. When you’re about this far down a Pie Week article and you’re really starting to struggle to find examples.

Which brings us to this pie/tart from Coq d’Argent. One of The City’s most famous eateries is now one of The City’s most famous eat-outeries and their home meal kits whisky you right back to the rooftop restaurant, just without the view. Or the service. Or the atmosphere. Still, it’s better than your cooking.

The vegetarian kit includes this comté and leek tart (pie), served with a truffle dressing, mixed leaf salad. It’s part of a three course extravaganza for one and is an ideal veggie order for Pie Week.

Benares

Think of Indian cuisine and your mind doesn’t normally jump to pies. And more’s the shame, because Benares have added two pies to their menu and they’re guaranteed to be brilliant.

With a newly reawarded Michelin Star under their arm, the additions come just in time for pie week, though we understand they’re a permanent addition.

Choose from a chicken tikka pie or a tandoori paneer tikka pie, both baked in puffed pastry and served with berry chutney.

My Pies

A grounded fleet of pie vans, normally making their way round various events and fixtures this time of year, My Pies has pivoted and is now delivering pies nationwide.

Choose from classic combinations like steak and ale, or get creative with something a bit more left-field like butternut squash, fennel and goat’s cheese or mushroom, spinach and truffle oil.
