A Night on the Thames (Here’s Why We Didn’t Want to Leave)

Perched on the South Bank with cinematic views stretching across the Thames, Sea Containers London is the kind of hotel that reminds you why London remains one of the greatest cities in the world. Breezy rather than buttoned-up, effortlessly stylish without trying too hard, it’s a place where weekends blur into cocktails, river walks, spa afternoons, and one more nightcap at the bar because no one is remotely ready to leave.
First impressions

From the moment we arrived, there was an ease to everything. The interiors channel a glamorous transatlantic liner fantasy. Think all polished brass, curved lines, velvet textures and floor-to-ceiling windows framing London in full cinematic glory. But unlike some design-led hotels that feel as though they’d rather you admired them from afar, Sea Containers actually feels fun. Lively. Relaxed. Somewhere you instantly settle into. And then there are the brand new Riverview suites…

Riverside suites

The riverside suites are, quite simply, the reason to book. Waking up to the Thames glittering below, watching the city shift from misty morning calm to golden-hour sparkle, is one of those very rare London hotel experiences that genuinely lives up to the fantasy. St Paul’s Cathedral rises in the distance, boats drift along the water below, and the ever-changing skyline becomes its own moving artwork. I found myself lingering far longer than necessary with coffee in hand, simply staring out the window.
This is London at its absolute best: dramatic views, incredible energy, and somehow still deeply relaxing.

Location
Location-wise, it could not be better placed. You’re moments from the South Bank’s galleries, theatres and riverside buzz, while Covent Garden, Soho and Borough Market all sit within easy reach.
Yet despite being in the middle of everything, the hotel somehow manages to feel cocooned from the chaos outside.

The bar
Of course, no stay here is complete without cocktails at Lyaness. Regularly named among the world’s best bars, it manages to balance serious creativity with genuine warmth – no intimidating mixology theatrics here. The drinks are playful, unexpected and outrageously good.
The Atom Martini was spectacular: sharp, ice-cold and impossibly elegant, the kind of cocktail that instantly makes the evening feel glamorous. Every drink arrives with a story, but thankfully, none of the pretension. We stayed far longer than intended, ordering “just one more” until suddenly the entire evening had disappeared.

This is the sort of bar where every drink becomes the best cocktail you’ve ever tasted.
The restaurant

The restaurant perfectly captures the hotel’s all-day, laidback glamour. Overlooking the Thames with sweeping riverside views, it’s the sort of place that effortlessly shifts from long lunches to candlelit dinners and late-night cocktails without missing a beat. The Atlantic cod was exceptionally delicate, buttery and cooked with real precision, while the rib eye steak arrived perfectly cooked, deeply flavourful and exactly the sort of comforting indulgence you want after a day in the city. The menu strikes that ideal balance between elevated and approachable, where everything feels considered but never overcomplicated.

The spa
Then there’s the spa. An understated sanctuary hidden away from the energy upstairs. After a day navigating London, the massage from Marnie was exactly the reset I didn’t realise I needed.
Intuitive, deeply relaxing and genuinely therapeutic, it was one of those treatments where you walk out feeling lighter, calmer and vaguely convinced you should reorganise your entire life around regular massages.
Final thoughts
Sea Containers gets something very right that many luxury London hotels miss entirely: it understands mood. It knows people want beautiful spaces, yes, but also atmosphere, personality and fun. It’s polished without being stuffy, glamorous without trying too hard, and luxurious in a way that still feels approachable.
This is the kind of hotel where you come for one night and immediately start plotting your return before checkout.
