“I Was Not Prepared For This Divisive Trend’s Comeback”

The cyclical nature of fashion means that, if you stick around for long enough, you’ll start to see the same trends swing in and out of favour among the style set. From 2000s-esque speed dealer sunglasses to the ever-divisive capris, this season sees its fair share of throwback aesthetics. One trend which wasn’t on my bingo card for a revival, though, was the mullet top.
The trend
Last week, Anne Hathaway made headlines for debuting a less conventional maternity look (she looked great). The outfit in question featured jeans paired with a cropped blue top and an exaggerated back that cascaded into a floor-skimming train.
Typically styled over either jeans or wide-leg trousers, the ‘business in the front, party in the back’ top is ideal for a girls’ night out.

Since then, my feed has been gradually taken over by fashion girls leaning into the same trend.
The top, characterised by a hem finishing at the waist in the front, before elongating at the back to create a dramatic, statement feature. It’s peak ‘going out top’.
While Malene Birger’s (now sold-out) version has become one of the most coveted styles, there are a handful of high street iterations available.
Sitting part way between a top and a dress, this really is an instance where the top is the outfit.
From classic ebony to eyecatching tones, like mustard, crimson, and aqua, if you’re looking to try the trend in 2026, there are plenty of optoins to choose from.
