Why We Can’t Wait For Ireland Set Comedy Small Town, Big Story

If you’ve been on the lookout for a TV series that deftly blends drama and comedy then Sky’s new series Small Town, Big Story is the show for you. Created by Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd, The Big Door Prize) and starring Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon), it’s set in a fictional town in Ireland, which attracts the attention of a Los Angeles TV studio. But the town holds certain secrets known only to a small group… read on for all you need to know.
What is Small Town, Big Story about?
The series, which is coming to Sky Atlantic later this month, was filmed in Ireland and is the brainchild of creator Chris O’Dowd, who also made Sky series Moone Boy. It introduces us to Drumbár, a small (fictional) Irish town that finds itself in the spotlight when a TV filming crew from LA arrives to film there, with the townsfolk mostly excited that their home will be a shooting location. One of the crew is Wendy Patterson (Hendricks), who lived in Drumbár when she was younger but found success in the US as a TV producer. Back in the small town that raised her, she feels caught between her past and her new life in show business. But Dumbàr has secrets unknown to the film crew that may yet come to the surface.

The other key character in this comedy-drama is local doctor Séamus Proctor (Considine), who is a respected member of the town community but has a secret he’s been hiding for years. With Wendy’s crew bringing more attention than the town’s ever had, everything is about to get turned on its head. The official trailer for the series gives us a little bit more info, too: there’s a strange phenomenon causing dead birds to keep randomly dropping from the sky, confusing the townsfolk, but Séamus seems to know the truth. There’s also clearly some history between Wendy and Séamus that apparently no one else knows, dating back to New Year’s Eve at the dawn of the millennium, and will have a key part to play in events unfolding.
Who else stars?
Chris O’Dowd also has a role in the series as Jack E. McCarthy, the writer of the TV show being filmed in the town. Also starring are David Rawle (Moone Boy), Eileen Walsh (Wolf), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Tim Heidecker (Us) and Michelle Forbes (The Killing). The six-part series is set to arrive on Sky Atlantic on 27th February.
