Eva Victor’s Poignant Dramedy Sorry, Baby Looks Like A Must Watch

The annual Sundance film festival, which was held this year back in January, often produces a few great films that go on to receive plenty of attention around the world. One such film this year is Sorry, Baby, which is set to release in UK cinemas in August, and is directed by and stars Eva Victor, best known for her role in the financial drama series Billions. It follows a woman who tries to recover and rebuild her world following a sexual assault, and has garnered glowing critical reviews. Here’s all you need to know:
What is Sorry, Baby about?
Sorry, Baby is Eva Victor’s directing debut and is produced by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins. Victor stars as Agnes, a college professor who seemed to have had a promising future and career ahead of her, until a traumatic event shattered her life while she was at graduate school. The film is told in a non-linear style, jumping back and forth in time, and we see Agnes at different points in her life before and after the incident. She’s close friends with Lydie (played by Naomi Ackie), who it is established has moved into a nice house and gotten married after grad school, while Agnes remains in very similar personal circumstances to where she was. Lydie comes to visit several years later and becomes concerned when Agnes begins to display signs of anxiety and depression.
What becomes apparent is that while the two were at grad school, a professor there began to take an interest in Agnes and her talent, but eventually ended up assaulting her, leaving her devastated. The film, however, which is a black comedy, is more concerned with the aftermath of what happened to her rather than focusing on the event in painful detail.
Sorry, Baby balances comedy with very serious issues.
Agnes is able to move forward, continue teaching, and maintain friendships and relationships, but is still unable to escape the slow-healing trauma. There have been comparisons to Fleabag in the way Sorry, Baby balances comedy with very serious issues, and Eva Victor has built a sizeable online following for her relatable comedy.
Who else stars, and is there a release date?
Sorry, Baby is due to be released by A24, and also stars a few recognisable faces: Lucas Hedges (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) plays Agnes’ neighbour and possible boyfriend Gavin, alongside Louis Cancelmi (Killers of the Flower Moon), Hettienne Park (Hannibal), Kelly McCormack (A League of their Own) and John Caroll Lynch (The Trial of the Chicago 7). It’s set to come to UK cinemas on 22nd August.
