Brad Pitt’s Thrilling Racing Drama, F1 , Arrives In Cinemas Today

Love some adrenaline-pumping drama? Brad Pitt‘s long-awaited F1, telling the story of a driver returning to his racing career after a decades-long absence, hits cinemas today. Starring alongside him are Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Damson Idris (Black Mirror) and Javier Bardem (Dune: Part Two), in what is set to be one of this year’s most nail-bitingly intense dramas. Read on for everything we know about the blockbuster…
What is F1 about?
Once having a reputation as the “sport your dad watches on a Sunday”, Formula One has seen a surge of popularity among younger generations and diverse demographics, thanks in part due to drivers like Lewis Hamilton, celebrity fans and the wildly successful Netflix docuseries Drive to Survive. There have been plenty of films about various racing legends, but F1 is the first to have the Formula One name in the title to capitalise on this newfound interest, meaning an A-lister like Pitt is a no-brainer to be in the driver’s seat. The plot is pretty simple: a former racing prodigy, who was forced to retire after injury, is coaxed back into action. It’s a little similar to the setup of Challengers, though probably with less of that film’s steamier scenes.

Sonny Hayes (Pitt) was F1’s biggest rising star back in the ’90s, but a terrible crash forced him to sideline his career- until he’s asked back thirty years later by the head of a struggling team, Ruben (played by Bardem). Ruben is Sonny’s old teammate, but of course, the former F1 star is at first reluctant to return. He’s persuaded to mentor an up-and-coming driver, Joshua (Idris), whipping the team into shape and helping to achieve glory. Kerry Condon plays the racing team’s technical director, overseeing the design of a car to give them an edge over their rivals.
Who else stars in F1, and is there a trailer?
Tobias Menzies (The Crown), Kim Bodnia (Killing Eve), Shea Whigham (Gaslit) and Simone Ashley (Bridgerton) also star, and there’ll be a host of appearances from real life F1 stars, including Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez and Charles Leclerc. The pulse-pounding first trailer introduces us to Pitt, Bardem and Idris’ characters, with Ruben telling Sonny that winning in Formula One is “the only place you can say if you win, you are the absolute best in the world”. Watch the full trailer below, while F1 arrives in cinemas today on 25th June.
