Fallout Star Ella Purnell Stars In Dark Comedy Thriller, Sweetpea

14th August 2024 | By Rufus Punt

If you saw Amazon Prime’s series Fallout earlier this year, you’ll know it’s lead star, Ella Purnell, who after appearing in Yellowjackets had a real breakout as survivalist Lucy. Now the actress is set to appear in a new dark comedy that’s a little closer to home: Sweetpea, which is coming to Sky Atlantic later this year, stars Purnell as Rhiannon, a woman living in London completely bored and tired of life and how it treats her. When things get too much, she ends up losing control- with dangerous consequences. Here’s all we know so far:

What is Sweetpea about?

Sweetpea is based off the book of the same name written by CJ Skuse and published in 2017, and follows a seemingly normal woman who isn’t all as she appears. Rhiannon Lewis might have a stable job and a boyfriend, but even those aspects of her life aren’t very fulfilling- promotions end up going to someone else instead of her, and her potential partner doesn’t seem that interested in the long term. She feels invisible in life, with people everywhere not paying any attention to her. And on top of all of this, her dad has a serious illness weighing her down even further. Unable to keep it all bottled up, Rhiannon eventually snaps and loses control, and this event gives her a dangerous new lease on life.

What else do we know?

It looks as though Rhiannon’s outburst will have consequences, and deadly ones at that: “Lately I’ve been getting really angry… like *really* angry” she says in the official teaser trailer, with flashes of her covered in blood. The synopsis for the show also teases that she discovers in herself an intoxicating new power and a killer secret- is the way to happiness and fulfilment through murdering those in life she finds annoying? Whatever the truth, repercussions for her surely aren’t far behind, making this a twisting, darkly comedic thriller that we can’t wait for.

In addition to Ella Purnell, Sweetpea is also set to star Nicole Lecky (Mood), Jon Pointing (Big Boys), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton), Leah Harvey (Foundation), Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso) and Dustin Demri-Burns (Slow Horses).

Is there a release date?

Sweetpea is slated to air later this year in October on Sky Atlantic, consisting of eight parts, and will also be available to stream through NOW. You can watch the teaser trailer below.
