The Agency Is A New Spy Thriller With A Star Cast
Last year Michael Fassbender returned to acting to star in David Fincher’s hitman drama The Killer – and he’s sticking with the thriller genre this year with his new TV series, The Agency, on Paramount+ this month.
Also starring Bond star Jeffrey Wright (No Time to Die), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen and Slim) and Richard Gere (Chicago) it follows a spy (Fassbender) who’s recalled from his undercover role- but finds it hard to withdraw from the life and relationship he built. Here’s everything you need to know:
What is The Agency about?
It’s been a busy time for spy thrillers recently, with Netflix also releasing their Keira Knightley-led espionage series Black Doves this month, and Amazon dropping spin-off series Citadel: Honey Bunny. The Agency is based on a critically acclaimed French series, The Bureau, and counts George Clooney and Grant Heslov as its producers. Fassbender plays Martian, a spy who worked for the CIA in Africa for several years and is suddenly pulled out of his role to return to the UK. Here at London Station, the CIA’s outpost in England, he now works as a senior case officer, continuing his spying career alongside station chief Bosko (Gere). But having spent so much time abroad leading an undercover life, Martian finds it hard to adapt to the change of pace and settle back in.
Things are made more complicated when the woman he fell in love with in his time away, Samia (Turner-Smith), reappears in London, and the romance between them begins to reignite. Aided by his mentor Henry (Wright), the CIA’s director of operations, Martian will have to decide whether to be pulled by his career and real identity as a spy working for the agency, or his innermost emotions and desires for the life with Samia he once thought he knew. As he’s pulled further into a complex web of international espionage and conspiracy, he’ll be forced to question himself, his mission, and Samia’s true motives.

This debut season of The Agency is set to have 10 episodes, with the first two, directed by Atonement and Darkest Hour director Joe Wright, available to stream now on Paramount+ in the UK. Further episodes will be released weekly on Sundays, and you can watch the trailer for the series below.
