The Best Films To Watch At The Cinema This Month

As autumn sets in, there’s still plenty of great stuff to watch at the cinema- and October’s got more than a few big releases. Anne Hathaway stars in the thriller Verity, while Tom Cruise stars in the bizarre new comedy Digger. Meanwhile, Jeremy Strong and Mikey Madison star in Facebook drama The Social Reckoning.
Verity

Based on bestseller Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name, Verity is a psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who is hired to complete the books of successful author Verity Crawford (Hathaway), who is unable to write following a serious accident. After moving into the Crawford family home, Lowen discovers a disturbing autobiographical manuscript containing shocking revelations about Verity, her husband Jeremy and their children. Soon, she begins questioning exactly what is true and who Verity really is.

Digger

Tom Cruise takes on one of his strangest roles yet in Digger, the enigmatic new dark comedy from Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu. Cruise plays the eccentric and hugely powerful businessman Digger Rockwell, who becomes convinced that he can save humanity from an impending catastrophe.
However, the disaster he is attempting to prevent may have been caused by his own actions. The film promises a very different side of Cruise to what we’ve been used to in recent years, with an impressive supporting cast including Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Michael Stuhlbarg and John Goodman.

The Social Reckoning

If you remember the decade-defining The Social Network, Aaron Sorkin is returning to the world of Facebook with The Social Reckoning. Inspired by the real-life Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen (played by Anora star Mikey Madison, the drama follows a young engineer who becomes increasingly concerned about what she discovers inside the company. She eventually teams up with Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), beginning a dangerous journey to expose the social network’s closely guarded secrets and their wider consequences. Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin and Billy Magnussen also star, with Succession star Jeremy Strong playing Mark Zuckerberg.

The Uprising

Andrew Garfield leads The Uprising, the latest historical action drama from Captain Phillips and 1917 director Paul Greengrass. Set in medieval England during the tumultuous reign of King Richard II, the film follows a man who rises against royal oppression and builds an army of ordinary people prepared to fight for their freedom.
Garfield is joined by Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller and Katherine Waterston. It’s one to watch if you enjoy historical dramas and, of course, Andrew Garfield.

I Love Boosters

I Love Boosters finally arrives in the UK some months after its US release. Keke Palmer stars as Corvette, an aspiring fashion designer and leader of the Velvet Gang, a group of self-titled “boosters” who decide to steal clothes from the wealthy and ruthless fashion entrepreneur Christie Smith (Demi Moore). When Christie steals one of Corvette’s designs, however, the gang decides to take their operation to an entirely new level. Naomi Ackie, LaKeith Stanfield and Taylor Paige also star in what’s been described by critics as another colourful, surreal and sharply anti-capitalist film from Riley. It’ll be screening at the BFI London Film Festival before a wider release.

Klara and the Sun

Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel, Klara and the Sun brings a very different kind of science fiction story to the big screen, directed by Taika Waititi. Wednesday star Jenna Ortega plays Klara, an Artificial Friend designed to provide companionship, who longs to find the perfect home. She eventually meets Josie (Mia Tharia), a young girl with a complicated relationship with her mother (Amy Adams) and a family struggling with profound loss. As Klara becomes increasingly involved in their lives, her innocent perspective begins to change the family around her. Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne also star in this timely AI-themed movie.

Other Mommy

Jessica Chastain takes on dual roles in Other Mommy, a supernatural horror film directed by Rob Savage and based on Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House. The story follows Bela, a young girl who is increasingly terrorised by a creepy, mysterious entity that she calls “Other Mommy”, which can change its appearance but frequently takes the form of Bela’s own mother, played by Chastain. As the supernatural attacks intensify, Bela and her family are forced to confront the terrifying thing that lives in her cupboard.
