Olivia Cooke stars in Amazon's The Girlfriend

One of our most anticipated TV series this year is The Girlfriend, a psychological thriller that releases today [10 September] on Prime Video. Teaming up House of Cards star Robin Wright (who also directs) and House of the Dragon’s Olivia Cooke, the series follows a mother (played by Wright) who meets her son’s new girlfriend (played by Cooke), but seemingly objects to her. But her motivations appear suspect and may be driven by an overzealous need to intervene in her son’s life. Here’s everything you need to know:

What is The Girlfriend about?

The upcoming miniseries is based on the book of the same name written by Michelle Frances, and is being spearheaded by Robin Wright in the director’s chair. She plays the lead role of Laura, a well-off mother who has very little to worry about in life, with a lucrative and rewarding career, and a loving family, including her husband and her son Daniel (Laurie Davidson), whom she constantly dotes on. Everything seems perfect- that is, until Daniel introduces her to his new girlfriend Cherry (Cooke), with whom he’s infatuated. Their first meeting is frosty, with both Laura and Cherry uncomfortable and getting off on the wrong foot. Laura’s takeaway from her interaction is that Cherry can’t be trusted and that there’s more to her than she lets on, immediately making her concerned for Daniel.

But Daniel (nor anyone else) can see or understand what she’s objecting to, and thinks there’s nothing wrong with Cherry- but the highly protective mother refuses to back down and remains insistent that she’s in the right to be suspicious. Is Cherry really an untrustworthy, manipulative person using Daniel as a means to an end? Or is Laura simply way too paranoid? When things do not remain acrimonious but “go from bad to deadly” as the official synopsis intriguingly states, it’s clear that everything in Laura and her family’s life could fall apart fast. It’s sure to be thrilling to see the two actresses go head-to-head as their characters, and it looks like you may have to make up your own mind as to who’s in the wrong.

The twisting storyline will be told over six episodes, and you can steam it on Prime Video now.
