Regretting You Is The Next Romantic Drama To Watch, From The Author Of It Ends With Us

This year is shaping up to be a good one for romance movies, with the likes of Materialists, My Oxford Year and plenty more. Regretting You, which is hitting cinemas later this year, looks like another one for lovers of the genre to add to their watchlists. It stars Allison Williams (Girls), McKenna Grace (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Dave Franco (Together) in a romantic drama about resilience and family, as the bond between a mother (Williams) and her daughter (Grace) is tested following a tragedy. Here’s all to know:
What is Regretting You about?
Get Out and M3GAN star Allison Williams plays Morgan, a mother and wife, and the central character of this adaptation of It Ends With Us author Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name. Morgan’s life is turned upside down following a devastating car crash, causing her to lose her husband Chris (played by Scott Eastwood) and leaving her widowed. With her daughter, Clara (Grace), also left without a father, the two are initially brought together in their grief, but underneath their relationship is quietly strained. The death of Chris reveals hidden secrets and betrayal, and Morgan and Clara struggle to pick up the pieces and move on.

Morgan had Clara when she was still young and had to put a pause on all of her life’s ambitions to become a parent, leading to an up-and-down dynamic in the present. But while mother and daughter experience conflict and tension without Chris in their life, they both find love interests that may help them navigate forward: Morgan begins to form a bond with Jonah (Dave Franco), while Clara is keen to be with Miller (Mason Thames), despite her mother’s fierce objections. But will Morgan and Clara’s relationship be damaged for good?

What else do we know, and is there a trailer?
In an interview with Have Coffee Need Books, author Colleen Hoover explained that the story is told “from a dual point-of-view centred on the inner lives of both a teen and adult protagonist…I wanted to write a book that bridged the gap between young adult and contemporary romance so that mothers can read with their daughters.” Given the film adaptation is being directed by Josh Boone, who also adapted The Fault in Our Stars, you can count on those same ideas being communicated onscreen. Willa Fitzgerald (The Fall of the House of Usher) and Clancy Brown (Promising Young Woman) also star, and the film is set to release in the UK on 24th October.
