If you love Blake Lively and you love romantic dramas, then her new movie It Ends With Us needs to be on your radar- if it isn’t already. The Gossip Girl and The Shallows star plays the role of Lily, a woman trying to navigate the ups and downs of a relationship while dealing with a difficult trauma in her life stemming from childhood. Adapted from the book of the same name by Colleen Hoover, the film just has had its world premiere and is set to release in cinemas at the end of this week on 9th August. Here’s everything you need to know:

What is It Ends With Us about?

Colleen Hoover’s bestselling book has had a surge in popularity several times since it first arrived on bookshelves back in 2019, thanks to it going viral on social media and TikTok in particular for its themes and heartrending narrative. The novel and the new film adaptation tell the story of Lily Bloom (played by Lively), who decides to move to Boston, which is where we meet her. After the recent death of her father, Lily is keen to take herself into a new environment and meet new people so she can move on with her life. She soon finds herself doing so when she strikes up a connection with a dashing neurosurgeon, Ryle (Justin Baldoni, who also directs), and his charm and intelligence sweep her off her feet.

But moving on and starting afresh won’t be quite so easy- Lily is hiding painful traumas under the surface, which stem from her childhood. Having had a seriously strained and difficult relationship with both her parents, she begins to worry when her new relationship with Ryle starts to remind her of them, and the pain they caused. She’s fallen deeply in love, but those past doubts are becoming hard to ignore- and things are made even more complicated when Atlas (Brand Sklenar) re-enters her life with Lily having once cared deeply for him. An impossible choice looms between the man she could see herself settling down with, and her first love.

What else do I need to know?

The cast also features Jenny Slate (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Hasan Minhaj (The Morning Show), Amy Morton (The Bear) and Kevin McKidd (T2 Trainspotting). The official trailer (which you can watch below), shows her opening her flower shop (fittingly called Lily Bloom’s) and gives us a quick montage of her passionate romance with Ryle- but there’s a glimpse of its falling apart. Atlas bumps into her and reminisces about their past romance, and the trailer ends with Lily saying contemplatively: “We break the pattern… or the pattern breaks us.”
