Sebastian Stan Stars In Dark Comedy Thriller A Different Man
Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice and Sharper) is starring in an unnerving new psychological thriller that mixes in a blend of dark comedy. A Different Man, which is set to come to UK cinemas in October, sees Stan play an aspiring actor who has a medical procedure to drastically alter his face and get a new start in life. However, he becomes obsessed with an actor who is set to play him in a stage play based on his own life, leading to unforeseen consequences. Here’s all you need to know:
What is A Different Man about?
Edward (Stan) has neurofibromatosis, which causes facial deformity, and often makes life difficult for him, not least due to the reactions of other people to him. Whether it’s being constantly stared at, stopped by people asking him questions, or being laughed at, Edward finds it hard not to feel self-loathing, until a chance comes up to change things.
A medical breakthrough offers a surgery that can completely alter his face, and he decides to take the plunge. With his new look, Edward feels like he can take a fresh direction in life and start things over, but this revitalised feeling is short-lived. A stage production is being developed that is based on his pre-surgery life, and as an aspiring actor, he feels born to play the lead role- but someone else with a similar condition is cast instead.
Suddenly, Edward quickly becomes fixated on this rival actor getting attention and stealing his thunder. As he adjusts to his brand new face, he begins to wonder if the surgery and jettisoning of his past life was actually worth it or not. Alongside Stan in the cast is Adam Pearson, who has neurofibromatosis in real life and had his breakout role in Under the Skin, who plays the charismatic rival actor Oswald. Also starring is Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) who plays Edward’s next door neighbour Ingrid, who treats him with kindness and is inspired to create a play about his life
The official trailer, which you can watch below, gives a short glimpse of Edward and his world, living in dark and dirty New York City, and his transformation due to the surgery. A Different Man debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, and is set to arrive in UK cinemas on 4th October.
