We Can’t Wait For Sky’s New Belfast-Set Romcom

With shows like Dreamland, A Town Called Malice and Then You Run, Sky is having a big year when it comes to exciting new TV projects. They show no signs of slowing things down either, with their particularly interesting new series, The Lovers, set to debut later this year on Sky Atlantic.
A joint collaboration with AMC Network, The Lovers stars Roisin Gallagher (The Dry) as a spiky and often foul mouthed supermarket employee, who meets and falls into a relationship with a TV presenter (Lovesick’s Johhny Flynn), who is already in a committed relationship with a high profile celebrity (played by Star Trek star Alice Eve).

Described as “a sexy, funny, fight-y love story about two people who appear to be utterly wrong for each other – yet may just be utterly right”, The Lovers entered production in Belfast last year, and got an official trailer earlier this year. Gallagher’s character, Janet, is certainly shaping up to be the relatable everyman that is rebellious yet loveable, a supermarket worker living in Belfast and has barely a care in the world for anything (including her life, according to the synopsis).
Her dreary and monotonous life is shaken up however when TV broadcaster Seamus appears out of nowhere into her backyard. A handsome and self-centred rising star in the world of showbiz, Janet might be the sort of person to see right through him, but the two soon find themselves drawn to one another.

Things are complicated though by the fact that Seamus is very much already in a relationship. As a charismatic TV talking head, he’s been living the high life in London with a glamorous house and celebrity girlfriend (Eve), and yet Janet’s nihilistic attitude appeals to him. Not much is known about Alice Eve’s character, but there’s obviously set to be a clash when Janet and Seamus’ growing relationship becomes known.
The trailer gives a bit more context, with Janet getting reprimanded for swearing at another employee at work, and Seamus signing off on his TV show before the two meet. A relationship with a “sort of famous celebrity” proves irresistible, and news quickly leaks out to Janet’s friends, but she sets two rules for the affair: they only see each other in Belfast, and they don’t actually fall in love.
Things never run smoothly in these kinds of affairs though, and you’ll be able to see how things play out when The Lovers arrives on Sky Atlantic and NOW later this year.
