One of the TV shows that we’re most excited for this year is World War II period drama The Narrow Road To The Deep North, starring Priscilla and Saltburn star Jacob Elordi. Set during the war, it follows Elordi’s character, Dorrigo Evans, and his life story, including his love affair with the character Amy (Odessa Young). The show is set to arrive on the BBC in the next few months, and the first look images have now been released – here’s all you need to know:

What is The Narrow Road to the Deep North about?

The Australian miniseries, picked up by the BBC to be broadcast in the UK, is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Flanagan, which was released in 2013. It takes us back to the 1940s as World War II is raging, and focuses on one particular soldier, Lieutenant-Colonel Dorrigo Evans. The series jumps back and forward in time between Dorrigo’s later life as an old man (where he’s played by Ciarán Hinds) and his exploits during the conflict, including his early years as he falls in love. The young Dorrigo meets the girl of his dreams, Amy Mulvaney, and as the pair get to know each other they fast fall into a passionate love affair, giving us the emotional crux of our story.

Across the five-part series, plenty of other events in Dorrigo’s life will be explored, including his time held captive in a POW camp after being captured and surviving the grim conditions and ordeals he faces. Described as “an intimate character study of a complex man, the epic drama is a compelling portrayal of the courage and cruelty of war,” The Narrow Road later covers his days after the war, making a career as a successful surgeon and being reluctant to embrace his war hero status.

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

The first look images show Elordi in action as Dorrigo, with one clearly taking place in the midst of a war campaign with our hero covered in mud and soil. Another one, in comparison, gives a glimpse of the romance story that unfolds as Dorrigo and Amy chat over drinks in a bar.

The miniseries is set to star Olivia DeLonge (Elvis), Heather Mitchell (Fake), Thomas Weatherall (Last Days of the Space Age) and Simon Baker (Boy Swallows Universe). There’s no definite release date yet, but it’s set to be later in 2025 on BBC One and iPlayer.
