Another cult classic is getting a sequel: Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are returning as witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens for the long-awaited sequel to 1998’s Practical Magic. The original became a popular cult favourite for its witch-themed romantic fantasy style, and in turn was based on the book by Alice Hoffman. Set to arrive later this year, here’s all we know so far:

What is Practical Magic 2 about?

Practical Magic 2 reunites audiences with Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), descendants of a long line of witches who have spent years living under the shadow of their family’s grim curse- any man who falls in love with them becomes doomed. The 90s film saw the Owens sisters finally break that curse and eventually become accepted by the townsfolk who feared them, and this new instalment will be set 25 years later.

We’ll be reintroduced to the sisters and be brought up to speed as to where they are now, and we’ll meet a younger generation, too: Sally’s daughter Kylie (played by Bullet Train star Joey King) will uncover dark family secrets as she begins to develop her own abilities. The family will have to work together across generations to confront the source of their magic when Kylie’s boyfriend (played by Xolo Maridueña) is threatened by the curse, and she dabbles in dark magic to free him.

Sally and Gillian, along with their aunts Frances (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne West), try to younger members of the family understand both the gifts and responsibilities that come with being an Owens witch. They’ll also travel from Massachusetts across the Atlantic to the UK in their quest to save their future- relying on sisterhood and magic to do so.
