oversized blazers

There’s no question the oversized blazer is the item on everyone’s wish list. Its simple, relaxed elegance garners instant appeal, warranting this classic the most coveted piece of tailoring this side of spring. From The Frankie Shop to Zara, these are our current faves…

Are you ready to pack away that duvet coat? We sure are. Make way for lighter, transitional fashion: think cable knits and dresses, trenchcoats, jackets and, of course, blazers. A wardrobe refresh is calling and this season it’s all about the tailoring, amplified tailoring. We saw maxed-out blazers at Dries Van Noten, Givenchy and Stella McCartney, but it’s the street stylers who’ve really got us lusting after a brand new wide-lapelled number. The extended shoulders and super long sleeves could almost appear cartoonish, if they weren’t so damn cool. Enter stylist Emili Sindlev and designer Anine Bing. The look is slick.

The beauty of the blazer is how versatile it is. One minute you’re wearing it power suit style, color blocking in matching wide leg trousers, next you’ve thrown it on with sweatpants and Adidas Gazelles. Or maybe your look is more Princess Di circa late ‘90s, when the original style icon adopted a look of boxy blazers worn with straight leg jeans and Tod’s loafers. In truth Diana’s wardrobe couldn’t be more of the moment, note her jacket, tracksuit and cowboy boots combo.

Princess Diana's style continues to influence fashion today. In the '90s she wore blazers to emanate strength and power. She succeeded in elevating the piece from standard work wear to the fashion must-have.

There’s no question that Zara serves up an incredible array of suiting, in all colours. However, thanks to the trend for top-to-toe tailoring, everywhere, from H&M to Topshop, has stunning pieces worthy of the ‘gram. Although, if you’re after a true investment, the label of the moment has got to be The Frankie Shop. The Gelso blazer, in all its XXL glory, is most certainly the icon of the moment.

Tailoring used to be about crisp, smart lines. Today we break the rules; blazers can be worn with relaxed pieces, like sweatpants and trainers. Adidas Gazelles are the current faves.
