If you are looking to fill the Off Campus sized whole in your heart this summer, Disney+ may just have the solution. FX just dropped the first trailer for Ryan Murphy’s The Shards, his adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 2023 novel. Starring Kaia Gerber, who plays a mysterious new kid at school, and enough secrets to keep you guessing all summer. Here is everything we know so far about your next binge-watch.

What the trailer tells us

The footage sets the scene fast. A nihilistic, bisexual seventeen-year-old trust fund senior named Bret at the exclusive Buckley prep school in 1981 Los Angeles. Life among the privileged and untouchable gets interrupted when a new student, Robert Mallory, arrives with a mysterious past. He’s bright, handsome and charismatic, but clearly hiding something, and as a masked killer known as the Trawler begins stalking the group, Bret becomes convinced Robert isn’t who he claims to be. The trailer opens on a knowingly self-aware note, too. Bret pitches the very story we’re about to watch to his editor, who asks if it has sex in it. The answer is yes, and pink cocaine and male hookers get thrown in for good measure. It’s Murphy doing what Murphy does best, all nostalgia, danger and glamour tangled together.

Who stars?

Igby Rigney leads as Bret, alongside Kaia Gerber, Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Hayes Warner and Graham Campbell. The ensemble also includes Wes Bentley and Evan Rachel Wood, giving Murphy’s world of beautiful monsters a suitably starry backbone.

Release date

The good news is, we don’t have long to wait until The Shards lands on TV screens, with the first two episodes set to premiere on August 6th 2026. You can catch the show on Disney+ and in the meantime make sure to watch the official trailer below.
