The Italian City Break That Stole My Heart

Rome is a city that usually demands a high-energy pace, but at Villa Agrippina Gran Meliá, the vibe is decidedly different. Built on the site of an ancient Roman villa once owned by the mother of Emperor Nero, this property brings together immaculate service, cultural sophistication, and that rarest of Roman luxuries: space. The Handbook’s Tamara Corin checked in to see if it really is the city’s best-kept secret. Here’s what she thought…
What sets it apart
Unlike typical city-centre hotels that can feel cramped or chaotic, Villa Agrippina functions as a legitimate urban resort. Set within a historic estate, the hotel is cocooned by sprawling Mediterranean gardens that feel like a secret sanctuary. It’s a unique oasis of calm positioned just across the river from the main throng, offering a sense of serenity that makes you forget the city exists the moment the doors close behind you.

The standout feature is undoubtedly the outdoor space. Finding a full-sized swimming pool in central Rome is like finding a needle in a haystack, yet here it sits, surrounded by loungers and lush greenery. Even in the cooler months, the gardens remain the heart of the property, providing a peaceful backdrop for a morning espresso or a late-night digestif.
Whether travelling solo or not, there’s a romance in the chaos here: Vespas whirring past ancient ruins, priests buying gelato, and the kind of golden-hour lighting that makes every selfie look ethereal.

The location

The hotel is perfectly positioned for those who prefer to explore on foot. Nestled between the Vatican on one side and the winding, cobbled lanes of Trastevere on the other, it sits at a crossroads of Roman culture. You are close enough to the action that you can stroll to St. Peter’s Square in minutes, yet far enough removed that you aren’t battling the crowds the moment you step outside.
The walk across the bridge into the heart of the city is particularly special at sunset, as the light hits the Vatican dome and the river begins to glow. It’s a location that manages to be both central and perfectly “cocooned.”
The rooms

The rooms at Villa Agrippina are warm, refined, and distinctly Roman. Eschewing flashy modernity for a more timeless, “grown-up” elegance, the design incorporates neutral tones and high-end finishes. My room felt like a private residence: spacious, quiet, and meticulously styled.
For those looking for total indulgence, the hotel’s spa is a must-visit. While intimate in scale, it features a steam room, sauna, and an outdoor jacuzzi that feels particularly decadent in the crisp December air. The treatment menu is curated by Clarins, adding a layer of trusted, high-end pampering to the stay.
Food & drink
The dining here is a love letter to Italian cuisine, leaning into the simplicity of high-quality ingredients. The menu offers everything from tapas-style small plates and bruschetta to arguably the best Napolitana pasta I’ve ever tasted. Each dish is paired with an impressive wine list featuring bottles so stylish they almost double as table decor.

The real highlight, however, is the Sunday Buffet Lunch. It’s a genuine Roman “thing,” with out-of-towners and locals booking weeks in advance. Having experienced it myself, I can see why—it’s an expansive, indulgent spread that captures the slow, sun-soaked energy of an Italian afternoon perfectly.

Things to do nearby

Villa Agrippina excels at opening doors that are usually closed to the public. I was able to experience a private Vatican tour organised through the hotel – a blissfully queue-free experience that allowed me to walk through the galleries in near-silence. Having a guide like Marco, who knows every corner of the Vatican, transforms a standard tourist visit into something that feels deeply personal and exclusive.
Beyond the hotel, you are perfectly placed to:
Sunset Strolls: Walk along the Tiber as the city begins to glow in the early evening.
Wander Trastevere: Explore the medieval lanes and hidden boutiques of Rome’s most atmospheric neighbourhood.
Of course, The Trevi Fountain and Pantheon are easily accessible for those ‘Insta-worthy’ morning shots before the crowds descend.

The verdict
Villa Agrippina Gran Meliá offers a level of polish and tranquility that is hard to find elsewhere in Rome. It’s an investment, but for the combination of its historic setting, the rare luxury of a pool and gardens, and the “insider” access to the city’s sights, it’s entirely worth it.
If you want a Roman escape that feels glamorous yet effortless, this is the place to book.
How to get there
A quick flight into Rome Fiumicino, then a 40-minute taxi or transfer straight to Villa Agrippina, even better if it’s ideally timed so you arrive just as the sun is beginning to descend over the Vatican dome. Seriously magical.
A chic add-on…

As part of the same trip, I added on a stop off in Milan and stayed at Palazzo Cordusio, part of Meliá’s city-forward portfolio, a beautifully restored 19th-century building perched right beside the Duomo. It’s sleek, polished, and positioned so perfectly that you can get from bed to high fashion in ten minutes flat. My room was a real wow, plus the service was outstanding. Design and style are certainly in the air here. I had a rooftop moment at Radio ME Milan (an energetic and family dog-friendly hotel) that was truly made for people-watching.
