Get your Le Creuset out, because the ’80s are back. There’s been whispers of a resurgence in the interiors world for some time, but let’s face it, the hit Disney+ adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s hit 1988 novel has pony-kicked us right into a world of glamour and chintz. We’re talking bold colour palettes, geometric patterns, maximalist living rooms, Memphis-style accessories, and florals… lots of florals.
For ’80s home decor like Rivals, you’re looking at the marriage of traditional and modern; lots of upholstery next to clean, sharp lines. Wallpaper in abundance, not to mention the quintessential borders, but also painted walls and furniture in blues, pinks and yellows. Skirted furniture is a must, but so are chrome-framed tables. Much of this style is a contradiction, but one theme remains constant: decadence. This was an era of maximalist styling. If the fashion was big, the interiors were bigger. So shake up a martini and roll back to the ’80s.
